Yoakum football: Bulldogs recover from nervous start in La Vernia scrimmage

The Yoakum Bulldogs had some jitters last week in their first scrimmage at 4A La Vernia.
“We started off a little nervous,” Yoakum head coach Bo Robinson said. “We made some mistakes. After we settled down, we were fine.”
Yoakum scored four touchdowns and held the Bears to two scores.
The ‘Dogs first and second offenses each scored twice.
“We did break a long touchdown run early,” Robinson said.
Yoakum did very well on defense as La Vernia’s first offense was unable to score; the Bears second offense was able to punch the ball in a couple of times.
La Vernia did have a size advantage on the lines.
“The Bears were bigger up front than we were,” Robinson said. “It was good practice for us because a lot of the teams we face in the regular season are bigger on the lines than us.”
The scrimmage was a good starting point but Yoakum know they have a long way to go.
“we need to get better at everything,” Robinson said. “We’re not very good right now but we can be later down the line and scrimmages help with that.”
Yoakum is at La Grange later this week for its second scrimmage.
The ‘Dogs first game is Aug. 26 at Vanderbuilt Industrial.
