The Yoakum Bulldogs once again were on the road this past week traveling two hours to play the Yoemen of Cameron Yoe. The Bulldogs suffered their second loss of the season 62-28.
The Bulldogs began the game with the ball at their own 14-yard line and had to punt after a sack of ‘Dogs quarterback Ty Gordon forced them back to their 5. Cameron Yoe returned the ball back to the Dogs 23 to begin their drive with a short field. Three plays later, Yoemen running back Bradley found the end zone on a 8-yard touchdown run, the first of four rushing touchdowns he would have on the night. The successful point after gave the Yoemen an early 7-0 lead.
The next Bulldogs drive would end fairly quickly after two plays when a Yoemen defensive back intercepted a Gordon pass and returned it for a 44-yard touchdown. After missing extra point the Yoemen would add to their lead 13-0. The Bulldogs having offensive trouble against the Cameron Yoe defense was a theme for the evening as they once again were forced to punt. The ‘Dogs were able to get some momentum back after Zerion Cuellar recovered a fumble but the ‘Dogs would give it right back to snuff out their drive. Cameron Yoe running back Reyes made quick work on the ensuing drive scoring the first of his three rushing touchdowns from 16 yards out after three plays. A successful two-point conversion extended the Yoemen lead to 21-0.
Yoakum would finally put together a scoring drive behind the running of quarterback Donovan Toussaint and running back Zarion Cuellar who combined to rush for 59 yards on the drive with Toussaint reaching pay dirt on a shifty 10-yard touchdown run. A Mark Sanchez extra point would bring the score to 21-7.
Cameron Yoe would return the Bulldogs kickoff back for a 74-yard touchdown though and with the extra point extend their lead to 28-7.
The Bulldogs would try to gain back some momentum starting with a 60 yard return of the kickoff by Trae Cuellar. The drive would stall at the Cameron Yoe 24 yard line following an inadvertent whistle on fourth down stopping play as X’Zavier Barnett was spinning out of a tackle to gain a first down. Yoe taking over at their 21 yard line would actually give the ball back to Yoakum on a fumble recovered by Drake Deel. The Bulldogs offense however could not cash in as Gordon’s pass was intercepted in the end zone for a touchback. Cameron Yoe added another touchdown and extra point increasing the lead to 35-7 going into halftime.
The Bulldogs offense came alive in the second half as running back TyJuan Garza added three rushing touchdowns to go with a 70-yard rushing performance. He also was helped carrying the load by Zerion Cuellar who rushed for a team high 84 yards on seven carries.
The Bulldogs look to notch their first win of the season this week against rival Cuero, which will be the 113th meeting between the DeWitt County towns here at Bulldog Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
