The Yoakum Bulldogs welcomed the Gonzales Apaches to their Homecoming festivities this past Friday renewing their rivalry for the 87th time. The Apaches were good guests not spoiling the Bulldogs Homecoming as Yoakum would win 42-15. The victory was a milestone as well for Bulldogs Head Coach Bo Robinson giving him 200 victories in his illustrious career.
“I had a lot of good coaches and players along the way,” Robinson said.
The Bulldogs opened the game at their 49-yard line after Gonzales tried to seize early momentum with an onside kick. The opening possession was a 13- play, six-minute drive that resulted in a Tyjuan Garza touchdown run from 2 yards out.
The extra point tacked on gave the Bulldogs an early 7-0 lead.
Gonzales' possession would be short as they fumbled away the ball. Will Robbins fell on the ball at the Apache 29  giving the Yoakum offense a short field. Only four plays would be all the Bulldogs offense needed as Qyion Williams capped it off with a 6-yard touchdown run. A Mark Sanchez extra point added to the lead 14-0.
After an Apache punt the Dogs' next scoring drive opened with a long 30-yard gain by Kadarius Price off of a Ty Gordon pass. The Bulldogs reached pay dirt three plays later with a scramble by Gordon from 21 yards out after a broken play. The extra point added to the Dogs' lead 21-0. The Bulldogs made things interesting towards the end of the first half as they drove from their own 43 down to the Apache 20 yard line with only seconds remaining setting up a Sanchez field goal attempt. The kick would sail wide right keeping the score 21-0 in favor of the Dogs.
Gonzales would open the second half at their own 28 and need only two plays as a Jarron Johnson pass to Josh Esparza who sprinted in from 64 yards for the touchdown put up the first points of the night for the Apaches. The successful point after narrowed the Dogs' lead 21-7.
The Bulldogs answered back later in the quarter with a short scoring drive starting at their 38 yard line. This time a Gordon to Price connection resulted in a 32- yard touchdown. The Sanchez extra point increased their lead to 28-7.
Gonzales not to be outdone would put up their final points of the game with a Johnson 10-yard touchdown run with 5:53 remaining in the third quarter. After a successful two-point conversion by the Apaches brought the score to 28-15.
The Bulldogs began the next drive at their own 40 and once again Gordon would connect to a Dogs' receiver for a touchdown. This time Cory Gomez caught a Gordon pass, turned up field, and sprinted down the sideline untouched for a 60- yard touchdown. The extra point afterward gave the Bulldogs a 35-15 advantage.
The Dogs' last scoring drive opened at the Apaches' 44. The six- play drive ended with Garza's second touchdown run of the night from 3 yards out. Sanchez's final successful extra point gave the Bulldogs a 42-15 lead they would hold with 3:57 remaining in the game.
Offensively for Yoakum, Gordon went 10-of-16 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 65 yards and a touchdown. Williams ran for 52 yards and a touchdown. Garza scored twice.
Gomez had two receptions for 69 yards and one touchdown; Price had two grabs for 62 yards and a touchdown.
Leading tackler for Yoakum was Robbins with seven tackles.
