Area football: St. Paul opens district at rival SH; Comanches host Skidmore-Tynan

St. Paul faces rival Sacred Heart in its district opener on the roady. Shiner hosts Skidmore-Tynan for district game No. 4.
St. Paul at Sacred Heart
District play starts on the road for St. Paul across the county at Sacred Heart.
“Both teams are going to be excited to play this game and it’s going to be a fun game regardless,” St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “Sacred Heart has an opportunity to do good things further down the road.”
The Indians, who have run a spread offense the last few years, have been throwing the ball a lot this season.
Quarterback Cole Duty has thrown for 1,054 yards and nine touchdowns on 76-of-154 passing.
Receiver Nic Angerstein has 25 passes for 498 yards and has scored 81 points.
Tight end Tyler Hawkins has 18 catches for 197 yards.
“Angerstein makes plays. Our defense will have to be aware of several players. Brady Haas will handle most of their rushing yards,” Wachsmuth said. “We need to adjust our defensive thinking as we are facing a different kind of team this week.”
On defense, the Sacred Heart line will look to open up room for the linebackers and secondary to make plays.
“Collectively, their defense is a solid unit,” Wachsmuth said. “Offensively, we need to run the ball well. In our last game, when Holy Cross started to pull away, we starting changing what we normally do.”
Skidmore-Tynan at Shiner
Shiner hosts the Bobcats of Skidmore-Tynan this week for district game No. 4.
“Our district so far has been very competitive. A lot of playoff teams are in it and you have to be ready each week,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
S-T is 1-5 and is 0-2 in district play; they are scoring 21.6 points a game and giving up 46.6 points a game.
The ‘Cats lean slightly towards the run with 162.8 yards a game while throwing for 127.2 yards.
Sonny Mann had completed 40-of-88 for 635 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions, most of Mann’s passes are going to Bennett Martinez , who has 201 yards and three touchdowns.
On the ground, Marcus Gabriel has 687 yards and eight touchdowns.
“They are going to lineup in the spread and we will see zone read, counters and run-pass options. Marcus Gabriel is the main running threat and quarterback Sonny Mann is a weapon as well,” Boedeker said. “Our defense has to be sound on our assignments and we will need to mix things up.”
Gabriel is the defensive leader with 62 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks from his defensive end spot.
“Their defense will come out in a split and blitz the linebackers. We need good communication on the line,” Boedeker said.
