Yoakum softball: Lady 'Dogs loses district opener, plays four in Brenham Tournament

The Yoakum softball team lost a close district opener to Edna and won one game out of four at the Brenham Tournament.

The Edna Cowgirls scored a walk-off run in the eighth inning to edge Yoakum 5-4 in the district opener for the Lady Bulldogs on Feb. 28.
Yoakum outscored Edna 2-1 in the third to break a scoreless game. Edna tied the game in the fifth; the Lady Dogs retook the lead 4-2 in the sixth before Edna tied it again in the seventh.
Destiny Rios led Yoakum at the plate with two hits, a double and one run.
Olivia Fojt pitched 7 2/3 innings with five runs on nine hits, three walks, one batter hit, one wild pitch and eight strikeouts.
Lexi Zaruba had eight putouts on defense.

Brenham Tournament
Yoakum 9, Lexington 2
The Lady Bulldogs collected 13 hits in a 9-2 win over Lexington to start the Brenham Tournament Thursday.
Yoakum scored four runs in the first inning and Lexington scored once in the third. The Lady ‘Dogs went up 9-1 after four innings; the Lady Eagles managed to score a run in the fifth.
Zaruba and Destiny Rios had three hits while Madilynn Steinmann added two hits.
Hannah Schultz got the win with two runs, six hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Addison Pekar had four putouts.

Montgomery 7, Yoakum 6
Montgomery scored a walk-off, seventh-inning run to edge the Lady ‘Dogs 7-6 on Thursday.
Yoakum scored twice to lead 2-0 in the second and Montgomery went up 5-2 in the third. Yoakum tied the game in the fifth and went up 6-5 in the sixth.
Montgomery drew level in the bottom of the sixth before winning with a single run in the bottom of the seventh.Steinmann had a good day at the plate with two hits, a run, triple and double. She pitched 2 1/3 innings with five runs on three hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Hannah  Schultz pitched four innings, one run on three hits and seven strikeouts.

Dripping Springs 2, Yoakum 1
Dripping Springs rallied from a 1-0 deficit after four innings to edge Yoakum 2-1 on Friday.
Yoakum scored its one run in the fourth before Dripping Springs tied the score in the sixth and scored one in the seventh.
Schultz led at the plate with two hits and Pekar scored the lone Yoakum run. Schultz pitched six innings, five hits, two runs, one walk and eight strikeouts.
Destiny Rios had three putouts.

The Lady ‘Dogs were held to two hits in a 10-0 loss to Lake Creek on Friday.
Lake Creek led 2-0 after one inning and scored three runs in each of the second and third innings before plating one in the fourth and one in the sixth.
