Grand Theater opens its doors for summer matinees

The Grand Theater is gearing up for summer matinees for the kids of Yoakum and surrounding areas, every Wednesday all summer long at 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.

“We’ve done this now for 6 years and I am an educator and I think it’s important for the communities and families to have something to do,” Grand Theater Owner Tammy Steinmann said. “I get sponsors and businesses to help me pay for the movies so that I can offer it free to the community.”

The matinees for the month of June will show movies such as “Puss n Boots: The Last Wish” on June 21, “Paws of Fury” on June 28, “Abominable” on July 5, “Kung Fu Panda” on July 12, “Sonic 2” on July 19, and “How to Train Your Dragon 2” on July 26.

Steinmann, a former educator, retired from teaching and now runs The Grand Theater full time.

“ I t ’s s o m e t h i n g I wanted to do because it’s important for the community and the kids,” Steinmann said. “This is the reason we opened up the theater. I tried juggling teaching and The Grand Theater for 7 years now, and I’ve tried to juggle them both. I didn’t want to retire from education. It was a really tough decision. I was pretty much born and raised here and I knew (The Grand) was something I’ve wanted to do. I thought it was important. With having my own kids, I didn’t want them to drive out of town to go to the movies.”

Over the years, The Grand Theater has grown quite a bit from one theater screen to two, including a second floor balcony.

For the summer matinees, The Grand Theater Grand Theater opens its doors for kid’s summer matinees  has 10 sponsors who have partnered with the theater to make this possible.

“The sponsors continue to support us,” Steinmann said. “We try to do as best we can on our end so that each sponsor will want to come back.”

The sponsors include Weaver and Jacobs Construction, Sweet Home Sand and Gravel, Jo’s Daiquiri and Beverage Barn, Lifeway Baptist Church and School, The Yoakum Learning Tree, The Hallettsville Learning Tree, LBJ Travel LLC, Don and Frances Boswell, Janie Rudolph, and Edwin and Sandra Steinmann.
