St. Paul football: Cards start with FHS
The St. Paul Cardinals played their second scrimmage of the season, at Weimar on last Thursday and will open at Flatonia
Weimar Scrimmage
The Cardinals scrimmaged Weimar and Rice Consolidated in Weimar.
St. Paul and Weimar each scored one touchdown while the Cardinals scored once against Rice.
“I thought the kids did well and took a step from our Nixon scrimmage,” Cardinals head coach Mike Jackson said.
Cards travel to Flatonia
St. Paul will play at Flatonia in the first regular-season game of the season.
Jackson is familiar with the Bulldogs’ first-year head coach Brent Mascheck, having coached against him earlier in his career.
“Brent does a good job with his teams,” Jackson said. “We will need to play error-free football. We will need to be able to run the football and that will open up the play-action pass.”
“Flatonia will be tough to beat but it will provide a good test for us.”
Flatonia was 11-2 in 2022 and were regional semifinalists. They return 16 lettermen along with five offensive and six defensive starters.
Defensive lineman/offensive lineman Kobe Burton (101 tackles) and offensive linemen Allen Torres, Henri Vincik and Rambo Ramirez will be key to Flatonia’s success this season. Receiver/defensive back Keegan Green will be featured on both sides of the football and Beck Zimmerman could play quarterback or running back.
