Local high school football: Cards host TMI, Shiner travels to IHS

St. Paul is home this week and the Comanches are on the road. Both are looking to bounce back from losses in their first game.

TMI Episcopal at St. Paul
St. Paul lost their opener to Flatonia 49-26.
“Our kids gave everything; we just got worn down because of our depth,” Cardinals head coach Mike Jackson said.
TMI Episcopal won their first game, downing Bruni 32-13.
TMI got it done on offense with the passing game as Grant Sweeney was 14-of-31 for 248 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.
Brody Worrich had four catches for 103 yards and three touchdowns with Jack Hall and Corbin Crocker getting a touchdown catch. Max Pena ran five times for 38 yards.
“TMI runs out of the spread and is going to throw the ball a lot,” Jackson said. “We need to put pressure on the quarter and play good technique.
The Cardinals had 278 yards against Flatonia, with 226 yards on the ground on 47 carries.
“On offense, we need to clean up the mistakes. We did move the ball well against Flatonia,” Jackson said.
Last year, St. Paul worked for a 38-35 win.

Shiner at Industrial
The Comanches play the first of two road games, visiting Industrial on Friday.
Shiner fell to Hallettsville 41-8 and will be looking to fix the errors from that game.
One of the things Shiner has been working on in practice is tackling.
“Our players have been working on tackling this week after missing some in our first game,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Industrial lost their opener to Yoakum, 36-14, in Yoakum.
Industrial has 27 players back and 13 starters (seven on offense, six on defense) from 2022 when they made the regional semifinals, finishing 10-3.
Industrial’s defensive effort relies on the play of the front seven: led by linebacker Beau Bethany and lineman Dylan Rerich.
The key for more points for the Comanche offense is to cut out the penalties.
“It is expected you are going to have some penalties in the first game because of first-game jitters but our first game is over with and we expect to do better in that area,” Boedeker said. “We also need to improve our ball security.”
The Cobra’s  spread offense will run through quarterback Ashton Garza (1,707 yards passing, 14 touchdowns, 1,009 yards rushing, 16 touchdowns in 2022).
“They have two good running backs and they are big up front. Garza is their main go-to-guy as he is a  dual threat,” Boedeker said.
In the 2022 game, Shiner shut down the Cobras 47-0.
