Yoakum football: On-the-rise Bulldogs face a solid Cuero team on Friday
Yoakum has had a good start to the season, winning its first two games against Industrial and Cameron Yoe.
Now Yoakum will face its toughest test of the season so far with DeWitt County rivalry game against Cuero on Friday in Cuero. The game is the 114th of the series.
“We have been improving each and every week, and we need to keep that going strong,” Yoakum head coach Bo Robinson said.
The Gobblers are also 2-0 with wins over El Campo 41-7 and Navarro 35-7.
Cuero is scoring 38 points a game and has given up just a single touchdown per game in the first two games.
“We feel like we can do some things that will put the Gobblers in a bind,” Robinson said.
Quarterback Mason Notaro has hit 31-of-50 passes for 425 yards, seven touchdown and two interceptions. Kenneth Jackson has led the ground game with 141 yards and two touchdowns.
Notaro’s best receiving target has been Daylon Gibbs, 134 yards on 11 catches and three touchdowns.
“Our tackling has gotten better but we did miss some tackles in space due to our fitness level,” Robinson said. “We cannot have any blown assignments. Our kids, even when they have missed an assignment, have played hard.”
Branft Patek has 23 tackles and 13 assists to lead the defense; Conner Kubesh had two sacks on the year.
The Bulldog offense has not executed totally smoothly yet.
“We have not clicked on all cylinders,” Robinson said. “We need to get our run game going better and we still have people learning the new things in our pass game.”
