Local high school football: Cards host FW Temple Christ.; Shiner takes on Freer
Post season is here for both the Cardinals and Comanches. St. Paul will play at home and Shiner will play at a neutral site.
Fort Worth Temple Christian at St. Paul
St. Paul, by way of finishing third in district, will host Fort Worth Temple Christian at 7 p.m. Friday at Comanche Stadium.
The Eagles are 4-6 overall and finished fourth in district with a 3-3 mark. They score 22.3 points a game and cede 27 a point a game.
The Temple Christian offense is the opposite of what St. Paul faced last week in their final district game.
The Eagles are run heavy with 80-20 run-pass percentage and run the ball 34.7 time a game with 2,076 yards and averaging over 200 yards a game.
“On offense, what they do is very similar to what we did earlier in the season,” Cardinals head coach Mike Jackson said. “They like to get under center and run the football.”
Leading the attack is Hezy Cisneros who has 65 carries for 365 yards, four touchdowns, 40.6 yards a game and 5.6 yards a carry. Maddox Caffey has 33 carries for 297 yards, seven touchdowns, 37.1 yards a game and 9.0 a carry while Ethan Rife has 284 yards and four touchdowns.
Nearly 16 players have a carry on offense over the season.
“They will give opponents triple option looks out of the veer,” Jackson said. “They will also run counters and trap as well as hit you with the play-action pass. Our defense will need to play assignment football well and control the line of scrimmage.”
Leading the passing game is Joseph Waldo (17-of-38, 172 yards, two touchdowns, four interceptions) and Rife (10-of-32, 186 yards, one touchdown and one interception).
Cisneros leads in receiving yards with six catches for 127 yards.
Pacing the defense is Caffey who has 30 solo tackles, 40 assists and 12.5 tackles for loss and has recovered three fumbles.
MJ Moses had 5.0 sacks for 32 yards.
“I expect them to stack the line, load the box and come after us,” Jackson said. “We’ve shown we can push the ball down the field to set up the pass. Our offensive line will need to come off the ball well and block well.”
Shiner vs Freer
The Comanches open the playoffs against Freer at Pleasanton at 7 p.m. Friday.
After going 0-4 in non district, the Comanches went 4-2 in district and placed third.
The Buckaroos were 7-2 and won four of five district games to take runner up.
Freer averages 30.5 points on offense and the defensive yields 19.2 points a contest.
Freer and Shiner most recently met in the 2019 bi district and 2020 area round with Shiner winning 77-7 in 2019 and 72-6 in 2020.
“We expect Freer to be much improved from when we have faced them in the past,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Freer will run out of the spread formation and will lean on the run.
“Their quarterback is a good athlete and a dual-threat player. They have a big offensive lineman. We will have to contain him,” Boedeker said. “They will run counter and plenty of zone-read play so we have to play our assignments well.”
Freer’s defense usually runs the 3-3 stack and Shiner will expect an eight-man front.
“Their defensive linemen are big and the linebackers have speed,” Boedeker said. “We will need to be able to keep drives going, execute well and make sure we score when we have the opportunity.”
