St. Paul boys basketball: Cardinals get two wins and fifth at Bloomington tournament
The St. Paul boys basketball team went 2-3 to place fifth at the Bloomington Tournament Dec. 28-30. Zeke Rodriguez was named to the All-Tournament team.
Palacios 51, St. Paul 18
The Cardinals opened with Palacios on the morning of Dec. 28, managing just 18 points in a 51-18 loss.
The Sharks outscored St. Paul 21-0 in the first quarter and took a 31-7 halftime lead.
Palacios scored 13 of 17 points in the third box and each team bagged seven points in the fourth frame.
Rodriguez’s six points led St. Paul; Trey Wexelman topped Palacios with 15 points.

Rodriguez sank 17 points and Carter Novak swished another 12 points in St. Paul’s 47-45 escape against Danbury on Dec. 28 afternoon.
The Cardinals took a 15-9 lead in the first frame and Danbury went on a 11-10 run in the second frame to drop St. Paul’s lead of 25-20 at halftime.
The Cardinals scored 13 of 24 points in the third box and survived a 14-9 Danbury run in the last quarter.
Mason Mitchell bagged 20 points to lead Danbury.

The Kenedy Lions had two quarters of 25 or more points scored as they route St. Paul 74-38 on morning of Dec. 29.
Kenedy led 26-10 after one quarter and St. Paul went on a 9-6 run in the second to trail 32-19 at halftime.
Kenedy led 49-32 after the third period and closed out the job with a 25-6 run in the fourth quarter.
Rodriguez scored 13 points to again lead the Cardinals and Jack Ehrig put in 12 points and three triples.
Kenedy had four players score 10 or more points, led by Shomari Wilcox who booked 20.

A third-quarter 27-5 run for St. Paul helped them fend off Victoria Gators 70-40. With St. Paul ahead 56-26 to start the fourth, each team sank 14 points. Victoria Gators took a 15-13 lead after the first frame and St. Paul scored 16 or 22 points for a 29-21 halftime lead.
Andrew Nunez hit two treys and sank 12 points while Ehrig had one triple and netted a dozen points.

The Cardinals finished the tournament in the same manner they started it with, a game against Palacios.
The second time around was closer as the Sharks bit off a 46-41 win
Palacios led 19-10 after one quarter and 29-21 at halftime. St. Paul went on a 13-8 run in the third quarter to get within 37-34 before the Sharks swam away with a 9-7 run in the fourth period.
Ehrig had 10 points and a triple for St. Paul while Rodriguez and Gabe Darilek each scored 10 points.
Weixelman was again a pain for the Cards as he scored 18 and made four treys for the Sharks.
