Heavy rains soak county

A steady stream of moisture caused by a frontal lift and instability provided the fuel for heavy rains last week, sending local totals to better than a foot at the airport and areas surrounding Shiner.

Hallettsville reset the all-time January record at 10.90 inches. The month’s long-standing record of 8.33 inches was set in 1934.

The majority of rain came from Jan. 22 thru Jan. 26, and it totaled 9.63 inches, sending creeks and rivers out of banks, flooding low water crossings.

The Lavaca River in Hallettsville reached 21.31 feet (flood stage is 24 ft.) on Wed. afternoon, while the Navidad at Sublime hit 31.57 feet Thursday morning, with flood stage being 27 feet. Moderate to heavy flooding was seen from Sublime to Edna.

Totals in the area reached from Wied 7.5 inches up to 11.5 inches in Yoakum and 9 to 12 inches around Shiner. Other local amounts include Cotton Grove 10.4, Moravia 10.6, Sublime 10.9, CR 132 at 9.2, CR 198 with 10.8, Appelt’s Hill 11.9, Shiloh CR 216 at 9.5, Ezzell Hope area (CR 444) with 10, FM 1891 9.75, Mont (FM 318) with 8-10, near HISD 8, Sweet Home 8, CR 128 10.5, Vienna 9.5- 10.75, Worthing 8.3, Wied 7.5, Hackberry CR 219 and FM 532 at 9, Sheridan 10, Hallettsville N. Main 8-9 and Bowie St. 10.5 inches.

Hallettsville saw the heaviest rainfall since Hurricane Harvey flooded the county in Aug. 2017, when over 22 inches fell.
