American Legion requests parking lot improvements during council meeting

In a very short agenda, the Moulton City Council heard from the American Legion’s request for future maintenance and paving at the Feb. 21 meeting.

All they’re wanting to do is make paving improvements to their parking lot,” City Administrator LuAnn Rogers said. “Their parking lot contains an undeveloped city street. It was granted with myself and the City Attorney drafting an agreement.”

The Moulton Police Department also presented their monthly report to council. In the report, a total of 80 traffic stops were made with 15 citations and 65 warnings being issued. There were 485 calls for service.

Moulton Police also hired Gabe Aguilar to serve as a new part time officer for Moulton.

“He worked for the Seguin Police Department before taking a job at the Kaspar Gold Exchange in Shiner,” Police Chief Daniel Beyer said in his report. “He is a manager at the Gold Exchange and holds an intermediate peace officer certificate with a bachelor’s in communications. He will primarily work weekend nights as Officer Alexander has to greatly reduce the number of hours he will be working. I couldn’t pass up hiring Officer Aguilar.”

The report also noted that there have been an increase in truck thefts in Lavaca, Gonzales, and DeWitt County. However, Moulton is the only town in Lavaca County that has not had any trucks being stolen.

“I believe it is due to our officers doing their job,” Beyer said. “We are visible and making traffic stops to keep the criminal element at bay.”

Other items on the agenda included:

• Council appointed co-engineers to act as City Engineers. The coengineers are Urban Engineering out of Corpus Christi and Befco Engineering out of La Grange.

• Council tabled an item on the agenda regarding the installation of a driveway at 405 Longhorn Dr. until they can get more information.

• Council discussed some grant opportunities for park improvements, but no action was taken.

• The grants for wastewater and drinking water in the city are in the application process.
