Is your pooch Farm Dog of the Year worthy?

C’mon, Texans! Surely somewhere in our great Lone Star State, we’re bound to have at least one good dog out there someplace. In fact, I bet there are more than a few that even award worthy.

I mean, it’s not like they need to pull a Lassie and save Little Timmy from the well or anything—though if your dog did something like that I’m almost certain they’re a shoe-in for the award—they just to do normal dog things, like keeping your place free from varmints and other unwanted critters, helping with the livestock now and then or fetching stuff when you need it.

If that describes your dog in the least bit, they could be leading contenders for the 2025 Farm Dog of the Year Award. Winners not only have bragging rights for the next year, but they also take home a year’s worth of Purina Pro Plan dog food and $5,000 in prize money.

So, do you think your pooch has what it takes to win Farm Dog of the Year? If so, you need to help them out. They need to get entered by Friday, July 12.

Now I don’t know about your dog, but mine isn’t his best at a computer. I’ll admit, I was impressed as all get out the first time I saw him get online, but it never fails: Sooner or later, he’ll be barking his fool head off at all the cat videos.

Plus, a little-known fact is that while our canine companions may be incredible at letting you know when the mailman drops by, they’re plum awful at dealing with the mail itself. Stamps tend to stick to their tongues, you see. They’ll cost you a small fortune in postage, left to their own devices.

So, give the little fella a hand, will ya? One with thumbs, preferably.

Thing is, I’ve grown rather tired, frankly, of reading all about these so-called “Farm Dogs of Year” from places like Georgia, Kansas or Florida. Surely, we Texans are bound to have some better dogs than they have running about in those places.

And considering the award gets announced at the AFBF national convention, which just so happens to take place in San Antonio next year, we can’t very well have another pooch from Utah picked as the grand prize winner. Again. Or… are you kidding me? New York? Really?

So, again I say, c’mon Texans!

Eligibility guidelines and submission details are available at fb.org/ initiative/farm-dog-of-the-year. Farm Dog of the Year nominations, which include written responses to questions, at least one still photo and a video clip (optional), must be received by July 12 for consideration.

Profiles of several dogs nominated for the contest will be shared beginning in October, with the public invited to vote on the People’s Choice Pup. More than 110,000 votes were cast in the popular social media platform last year, and the winner took home a $2,500 cash prize from Purina.

So, get those submissions turned in. It’s a matter of pride, y’all. Texas pride, no less.
