City reviews water permit process

By Clayton Kelley

The Moulton City Council discussed a permit process for new water service connections at the July 9 meeting.

“There was a discussion, but no action on this item,” City Administrator LuAnn Rogers said. “What this is regarding is new service taps. If someone wanted to tap on to our system, we’re trying to develop a permit process for this. It’s not necessarily going to have a cost to it, it’s just for us to analyze what this new s e r v i c e is specifically asking from us and if we have the capacity to provide it.”

“We’re still in development and we were just discussing what this application needed to contain in it. The people requesting this would be someone who does not have service with us but wants to be on our water or wastewater. Historically, in the past, the city normally did that. However, since we are close to capacity on some of our services, it’s something we need to look at that closer in the future should we get that type of request from people. There isn’t any cost on anything related to this permit, it’s really for us and our records to determine if it’s available to that location or not.”

The state only requires the city to have so many connections per water pressure and capacity.

Council members also discussed water services on County Road 291. There are significant water pressure issues there and the city is waiting on a contractor to give them some quotes on making changes to that. There are only a few customers on that line and it’s on the end of Moulton’s line. No action was taken on this.

The Moulton Police Department report showed that there were a total of 68 traffic stops for the month of June with 26 citations being given and 42 warnings. There was a total of 356 calls for service and four people charged with drug paraphernalia possession.

It was also reported that Officer Bill Teich has accepted a new position with the Yoakum Police Department. The position for this job will be posted on different websites.

Other items on the agenda included:

• The City of Moulton appointed Deborah Sevcik as the official city tax assessor-collector.

• The city discussed some hazardous mitigation training which is done through the Texas Department of Emergency Management. It was just a discussion on if any city employees needed to take this.

• A $3,000 expenditure from the Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund for the purpose of advertisement for the Jamboree which was held this past weekend was approved.
