St. Paul volleyball: Lady Cards play at Rice, San Marcos HC tournaments
The Lady Cardinals played in the Rice Tournament last weekend and won four matches in the San Marcos Hill Country Tournament Aug. 23-24.
Rice Tournament
Pool C Play Thursday
The Lady Cardinals picked up two wins and one loss during Thursday’s Pool play C to take second.
St. Paul got sweeps against Van Vleck and Palacios, and fell to Weimar in two sets.
St. Paul 2, Van Vleck 0
The Lady Cardinals served up around 10 aces to help them open the tournament with a 25-13, 25-18 win over Van Vleck Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Leopards grabbed the initial advantages with six of the first eight points of the first game. St. Paul came roaring back with a 6-1 run; Van Vleck countered with four straight points for an 11-8 lead.
The Lady Cardinals went on a 17-2 run to win the set with about four of five aces from Sloane Kocian, two Emery Kennedy kills and a Samantha Moeller kill and block.
To kick off the second game, Moeller had several aces and Skylar Mozisek put down a kill as St. Paul scored the first six points. After the Lady Leopards got two points on the board, the Lady Cardinals went ahead 10-2 on a Dallyn Pesek kill and two Kennedy aces. Van Vleck got within 10-8 and 13-10. St. Paul then outscored them 6-1 with serves by Avery Pesek and a Moeller kill.
Van Vleck got within 21-16 before St. Paul scored four of the next six points with Addy Matias getting the set-winning kill.
St. Paul 2, Palacios 0
Their second tournament match against the Sharkettes was a little closer but St. Paul prevailed 25-16, 25-20.
St. Paul opened the match with a 7-2 lead before Palacios closed down to 7-5.
Kennedy had a block and Mozisek added a kill to get a 15-10 lead for the Lady Cardinals.
St. Paul then went on an 11-6 run to take the first game with Matias and Kennedy getting kills and Hajek converting two aces.
Mozisek got two kills and Dallyn Pesek got a block as St. Paul led 5-1 after the second set’s initial six points.
Palacios rallied to knot the set at 6-6 before an Erin Hajek kill, a Mozisek ace and Kennedy kill contributed to St. Paul taking a 14-10 lead that they increased to 18-10.
The Sharkettes then scored five of the next seven points to swim back into the set; the teams then split the final 10 points to give St. Paul the set and the match.
Weimar 2, St. Paul 0
The Lady Cardinals gave Weimar a good fight but fell short to the Lady Wildcats 25-16, 25-14 to close out the day.
After a 5-5 tie in the opening set, Weimar went on 9-1 run with an ace and kill by Chandley Tolbert and Janiyah Cooper.
St. Paul got a couple of points off of a Kennedy ace and Mozisek kill and were within 22-14 after two Matias kills before a slight 3-2 Weimar run ended the first set.
In the second game, the Lady ‘Cats outscored St. Paul 9-2 from a 4-4 tie; St. Paul battled to get within 15-11 but Weimar got kills from Tolbert, Cheyenne Booker and Cooper during a 10-3 run to take the second set and the match.
Pool Play Friday
St. Paul played Columbus, Rice Consolidated and Iola on Friday.

The battle of the Lady Cardinals went to Columbus 25-11, 25-17.

The Lady Cardinals played Flatonia in their first bracket match on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs took a 21-25, 28-26, 25-16 win.

The Lady Cardinals won the Gold bracket of the San Marcos Hill Country Tournament Aug. 23-24.
Friday pool play
The Lady Cardinals tied with Greenville 25-15, 18-25, swept Prairie Lea and lost to Keystone 26-24 and 25-16 in pool play Aug 23.
Saturday bracket play
St. Paul beat New Braunfels Christian 26-25, 25-22; beat Austin Texas School for the Deaf 25-16, 25-16 and swept Pharr Spartans 25-0, 25-22 in the Gold Championship game.
