Shiner, St. Paul football: Shiner host Cobras; SP at Louise

The Comanches are back home for the first time since the season opener while the Cardinals hit the road for two weeks.
Industrial at Shiner
The Comanches will host the Cobras at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“It will be another challenging game. We have played Industrial several times in the past and it’s always been a good game,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “They have not changed a lot and have big lines.”
Like the Comanches, Industrial has lost its first three games.
They have averaged 31.0 points per game but have given up 39.3 points a game in losses to Edna, Yoakum and Goliad.
Industrial will likely play Nicolas Kucher at quarterback.
Running back Cooper Martin will be the main focal point on the offense that has nearly an entire new line.
The Cobras will rely on the running game and will throw some play-action passes.
“Cooper Martin is a three-year starter and he runs hard, and can be a challenge to tackle. Nicolas Kucher is new at quarterback but did play receiver last year. He throws and runs well,” Boedeker said. “Their main receiving target is David Gonzales and they will also get the ball to Aidan Janis on the perimeter. Our pad level on the line has to be good  and we will need to close gaps.”
Brady Koop and Sam Kurtz head up the Industrial defense.
“With playing a team with bigger lines, we will need to have good pad level like we did against Poth. The offensive line must have good feet work and stay on blocks so we can move the ball well. Industrial’s defense is similar to Poth’s,” Boedeker said.
In last year’s game in Vanderbilt, the Cobras bit later, winning 41-34.
St. Paul at Louise
The Cardinals play at the Louise Hornets to start a two-game road trip.
“It will be an interesting game because Louise has two different offenses,” St. Paul head coach Barry Wolf said.
The Hornets are 1-2, suffering setbacks to Flatonia (33-6) and St. Paul district rival Sacred Heart (21-7). Louise edged Bloomington 8-6 for its first win.
The Hornets will face both Shiner teams as the Comanches are in their district.
Louise averages 7.0 points a game on offense and cedes 20.0 points on defense.
The Hornets have had a slow start offensively with 87. 4 yards a game (49.7 rushing, 37.7 passing).
“In their first two games, they were in a spread look. Against Sacred Heart, they were in tight/unbalanced formation and ran the football,” Wolf said.
Leading the run game are Lake Wadsworth (7-63) and Jeric Melchor (28-52, 2 TDs). Conner Gonzalez has passed for 113 yards on 13-of-27 with four interceptions.
“Wadsworth is a good runner. Gonzalez throws good and can also run. We need to focus on shutting those two down,” Wolf said.
Wadsworth leads the defense with 27 total tackles, 19 solo tackles, eight assists and 1.0 tackles for loss.
“We need to be able to move the ball on the ground against Louise. Just going to be an interesting game against a team that runs two different offenses,” Wolf said.
