Be aware of toll scams

Recently, a text scam has been circulating that addresses toll customers in regards to having outstanding and unpaid tolls on their account.

The warning comes in the form of a text that impersonates TxTag and claims a balance is due or is late in payment.

The message says to avoid the late fees, the driver must pay within a 12-hour period.

If the toll fee is not paid, it will increase and be reported to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The message also contains a link to TxTag and a personal message from the Toll Road team telling the toll customer to have a good day.

This text message is a phishing scam and has been occurring since last April, but has increased recently.

According to Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), it is working on having these fraudulent websites to be taken down in the hope of preventing their customers from becoming a victim to this scam.

TxTag wants its customers to know that the security and verification is taken very seriously.

Although TxTag communicates with its customers through email, text or outbound phone calls, it does not send text messages regarding final payment reminders or past due balances.

TxDOT is asking toll customers, who receive an unsolicited text, email or message saying its from a TxTag or another toll agency, to be vigilant on these scams and should contact TxTag Customer Service directly at TxTag.org, or by calling 888-468-9824.

Should you receive a text of this nature, delete it from your phone, and never give out any personal finance information or pay money to a suspected scammer.
