Moulton Police Department Updates
By Clayton Kelley
More updates were given on the new Police Department for the City of Moulton.
The drawings for the building have officially come in and Police Chief Daniel Beyer is accepting donations for the building.
“I already have my taxpayer I.D. number from the comptroller’s office of public accounts,” Beyer said. “We’re calling it ‘The Friends of the Moulton Police Department.’ That’s going to be my non-profit which will allow me to accept donations for the construction of the Moulton Police Department. Taxpayer dollars are not an option at this point. The city needs sewer, electricity and water wells before we need a new police department building. I am going to have to get as many donations as I possibly can from either private donors or grant money. We’ve already looked into some grants for this and potential fundraisers as well.”
Those wanting to donate can contact Beyer at (361) 798-0956. They can also meet him in his current office at Moulton City Hall.
There is already an architect involved. The cost of the architect was paid for by an anonymous donor in the community.
“This donor heard I was working on this project, and he contacted me,” Beyer said. “He’s a very big supporter of myself and law enforcement. The architect has been phenomenal."
Beyer gave an overview of the new building and what it will look like on the exterior and interior. Beyer had a basic drawing that one of the officers and himself had made. He then presented it to the City Council.
“We’re still in the very early stages,” Beyer said. “I am happy with the drawing. My office will have a window. We want to have two additional offices in the building that could house a constable and a justice of the peace. We want to make it available to county and state officials. We also may have a possible third office for a deputy or trooper. When you walk through the front door, there will be a lobby. There will be a back portion of the building that’s only accessible to Moulton staff. My office will also be on the corner where you can enter from the lobby. There will also be a break room and parking areas at the back of the building. The parking spaces will be covered.”
Beyer said there will also be cubicles for extra officers in the building. Right now, the MPD has five full time officers and five part time officers.
He is excited for this development. “I want this to be my legacy to Moulton,” Beyer said. “I am excited, optimistic and eager for this new department. I wouldn’t be able to do this without the help of my team."
Beyer said this also wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the Lone Star Bank donating the land.
