DeWitt County officials attend County Investment Conference

DeWitt County Judge Daryl Fowler and County Treasurer Desi Poth-Garibay recently joined more than 200 county officials from across Texas at the 2025 Conference of the County Investment Academy, held June 16-18 in Corpus Christi.
The annual event, hosted by the Texas Association of Counties (TAC), brought together treasurers, auditors, judges, commissioners and finance professionals for three days of intensive discussion on county investment strategies, economic trends, and emerging technologies in local government management. Topics included the use of artificial intelligence in county operations, best practices in public fund investing, and navigating shifting economic conditions.
“This conference is a great chance to learn what’s new and what’s working when it comes to managing county finances,” Poth-Garibay said. “It helps ensure we manage taxpayer dollars wisely and keep our county financially secure.”
In DeWitt County, the treasurer, auditor, and county judge comprise the investment committee responsible for managing a financial portfolio typically ranges between $50 million and $80 million. The funds are earmarked for long-term infrastructure and road improvements.
“We are intent on meeting our current financial needs for public safety and general welfare, as well as preparing for a soft landing when the Eagle Ford Shale Play is depleted,” Fowler said.
The County Investment Academy is co-sponsored by the Southwest Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business. The program supports continuing education and sound financial stewardship among county officials throughout Texas. For more information, visit www.county.org.
