St. Paul baseball: Zak Johnson appears in 21 games for Bearkat baseball
St. Paul 2022 graduate Zak Johnson, a junior who transferred in from Temple Junior College, made 21 appearances for the Bearkat baseball team in the 2025 season.
Sam Houston State went 12-43 overall, 6-21 in conference play, a 9-21 home record, 2-19 on the road and 1-3 mark at neutral sites.
Johnson saw action in the season opener at home to Missouri State in the first game of a three-game series as the Bearkats fell 11-6 on Feb 14.
He pitched one inning with two hits, one run, one earned run, one strikeout, double, triple, five at bats, five batters faced, two flyouts and 20 pitches.
Johnson pitched 1/3 of an inning with three hits, three runs, three earned runs, one strikeout, one double, four at bats, four batters faced and 18 pitches as SHSU fell in the first game of a three-game home series against New Jersey Institute of Technology.
He pitched one inning with two strikeouts, three at bats, three batters faced, one flyout and 22 pitches in Sam Houston State’s 8-3 loss to Nebraska Feb. 28 at the Frisco Classic in Frisco.
March 5 in the Bearkat’s away game against University of Texas-Arlington, Johnson pitched one inning, one walk, three strikeouts, one wild pitch, three at bats and four batters faced as SHSU won 9-8.
He worked one inning with one strikeout, three at bats, three batters faced, two flyouts and 14 pitches as SHSU fell to University of Oklahoma 6-5 in Norman, Okla. in the first game of a three-game series March 7.
In game three of the series and the second game of a doubleheader March 9 against the Sooners, Johnson took his first loss of the season with two hits, two runs,one double, two at bats, two batters faced and four pitches as the Bearkats lost 9-7.
In the March 12 home game against Houston in the Don Sanders Cup Series, Johnson pitched 2/3 of an inning with one hit, three at bats, three batters faced, one flyout, one groundout and 16 pitches in a 12-11 SHSU win (the game was moved to Sugar Land and completed).
Against Abilene Christian March 16 at home, Johnson earned his first win to even his record at 1-1 with three innings pitched, two hits, one walk, three strikeouts, 10 at bats, 11 batters faced, two flyouts, three groundouts and 51 pitches in a Bearkat 2-1 win in the third game of a three-game series.
Johnson’s next action was the third game of a three-game series March 23 at home to Louisiana Tech as SHSU took a 9-7 loss. He pitched 1 1/3 innings, two hits, one run, one earned run, two strikeouts, one double, one triple, six at bats, six batters faced, two groundouts and 21 pitches.
On the road against Texas on March 25, Johnson pitched one inning, three hits, three runs, three earned runs, one strikeout, one double, two home runs, six at bats, six batters faced, one flyout, one groundout and 23 pitches as Texas won 13-3.
In the opener of a three-game series at Western Kentucky on March 28, he worked one inning with two hits, two runs, two earned runs, one walk, one home run, six at bats, seven batters faced, two flyouts, one groundout and 14 pitches in a 6-0 SHSU loss.
Johnson pitched 2/3 of an inning, one hit, two at bats, three batters faced, one flyout, one groundout and 16 pitches in the April 1 home game against Rice with the Bearkats falling short 9-1.
April 6 against New Mexico State in the third game of a three-game series, SHSU lost 9-6 as he worked one inning, one hit, one run, one earned run, one walk, one strikeout, one hit by pitch, one double, four at bats, six batters faced, two flyouts and 24 pitches.
On April 8, SHSU hosted Texas A&M with the Aggies taking a 14-1 win, Johnson threw for 2/3 of an inning, two hits, one run, one earned run, one wild pitch, one hit by pitch, one double, four at bats, five batters faced, one flyout and 14 pitches.
In the opener of a three-game series against Kennesaw State, he pitched one inning with two hits, one run, one earned run, one walk, one strikeout, one home run, four at bats, five batters faced, one groundout and 17 pitches in the Bearkats’ 9-2 loss.
Johnson pitched 1/3 of an inning with three hits, five runs, two walks, two doubles, three at bats, six batters faced, one flyout and 33 pitches in an 18-9 home loss to Lamar on April 15.
In the closer of a three-game series at Dallas Baptist on April 19, he pitched 1/3 of an inning, one hit, one run, one earned run, one walk, one strikeout, two wild pitches, two at bats, three batters faced and 10 pitches as SHSU lost 14-4.
In the April 29 home game at Baylor, Johnson pitched 1 2/3 innings, four strikeouts, one wild pitch, five at bats, five batters faced, one flyout and 22 pitches but SHSU lost 15-4.
He worked one inning, five hits, four runs, four earned runs,two doubles, one home run, eight at bats, eight batters faced, one flyout, two groundouts and 22 pitches in the third game of a three-game series May 11 at Middle Tennessee State with the Bearkats falling 13-3.
Johnson pitched one inning with one hit, one run, one walk, one strikeout, one hit by pitch, one double, four at bats, six batters faced, two flyouts and 17 pitches in the opener of a home series against Florida International University who won 13-5.
Johnson pitched in the closer of the series May 17 with one inning, two hits, two runs, two earned runs, one walk, one strikeout, one triple, five at bats, six batters faced, one flyout, one groundout and 16 pitches in SHSU’s 10-5 loss, his final appearance of the season.
Totals for the season, Johnson had a record of 1-1, pitched 20.0 innings, ceded 28 runs on 35 hits, 27 earned runs, 12.15 ERA, 10 walks, 23 strikeouts, 12 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 107 batters faced who had an overall 0.380 batting average, and had four wild pitches, two sacrifice flys allowed.
