DeWitt Commissioners present Distinguished Service Award

By Clayton Kelley

The Texas Historical Commission received a distinguished service award certificate at the DeWitt County Commissioners Court meeting July 14.

“We’re just proud that we had this commission that is an active commission,” Historical Commission Director Peggy Ledbetter said. “We have a plan of action every year to preserve history. One of our goals is bringing the young people in. Our history helps the county. I enjoy the work, and we have very active people that are really interested in being a member of the Historical Commission. We have a total of 50 members. I’m proud of them. We have received this certificate every year consecutively since 2011. This is for all of our work through the year preserving and promoting the history of our county.”

Commissioners also appointed Jason Obelgoner to the Historical Commission for the 2025-26 term.

At the meeting, Commissioners also heard information from the organization called Call Sign Victor.

“Call Sign Victor is a non-profit organization and has served over 800 veterans, first responders and their families across 50 states,” Call Sign Victor Chance Crow said. “Our base of operations is in DeWitt County. We continue to press on with our mission since inception. Through the teachings of Judeo-Christian principals, we have seen families reunified and identities changed. It is upon these principals that we build a network of organizations that support these goals. Our program offers tactical withdrawals for veterans, first responders and their families. It is a weekend that starts on Thursday evening and ends Sunday mornings. We address problems that continuously plague veterans, first responders and their families. We take a step back from the frontlines of life and give these guys tips, tricks and trades that will help them. They can offload all the things that they need to work through from injuries received in the lines of service whether they be physically, mentally or spiritually. We’re a peer driven organization. None of our members have a degree in psychology, but we do have a degree in experience or the school of hard knocks.”

Other items on the agenda include:

• Commissioners approved a display of Alamo Letter Society’s placement of a granite monument and bronze replica of Col. Williams Barrett Travis’ Letter from the Alamo on courthouse grounds.

• Commissioners received a proclamation from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service designating Yorktown Elementary School as a Healthy South Texas Recognized School.

• Commissioners approved a two year lease agreement of $1,800 per month between DeWitt County and 1884 Investments LLC for use of office space for the Justice of the Peace Precinct 2.
