Authorities warn public about a scam

Local law enforcement agencies are issuing a scam alert to its citizens regarding a scam that has been circulating recently through the area.

According to a Shiner Police Department social media post, the scam targets people by showing a text message claiming the recipient is on their ‘final notice’ to pay an outstanding traffic ticket. It also gives a deadline and potential consequences if the fee isn’t paid.

The scam claims the recipient can be reported to the TxDMV violation database, have their vehicle registration suspended, receive a 30-day license suspension, pay a 35 percent service fee at toll booths or be prosecuted.

The Shiner PD says state departments will never text residents about outstanding tickets.

They also say enforcement will never call about outstanding warrants.

Authorities advise the recipient of the text to block it and report any text or call making claims of this nature.
