May rains hit 8 inch mark

May became the year’s wettest month thanks to strong storms bringing locally heavy rainfall and high winds.

The northern part of the county also saw a tornado warning during the stormy period. The warning lasted about a half hour on the twenty-seventh in the northern reaches of the county.

The city amassed eight inches with the heaviest of 3.57 inches on the first.

For the year Hallettsville has totaled 17.23 inches which is slightly above the average of 17.06 inches. The area also received pea-size hail on the first and second.

May rainfall records include an all-time high of 15.15 inches in 1914, and 0.01 in 1963.

The month was a warm one in spite of the high rain total.

A high of 93 degrees came on the tenth with a low of 51 degrees on the second. Daytime highs averages 84.5 degrees (normal is 86), while lows came in at 67.8 degrees (normal is 66).

All-time temperature records for the month are a high of 102 degrees on May 18, 1925 and a low of 38 degrees on May 2, 1929.

Thunder was heard on 11 days and fog was seen on seven mornings.

JUNE FORECAST

National Weather Service forecasters say June should receive close to normal rainfall with near normal temperatures.
