Local sports: WORLD SERIES BOUND!!!!-Shiner Junior Softball wins Southwest Regionals, advances to WS for first time in history
The Shiner Junior League softball team continued its historical run by winning the Southwest Regional Tournament on July 22, defeating West Mesa, N.M. 14-8.
Shiner got a first-round bye and advanced to the championship game with a 19-0 win over Lake Charles, Louisiana 19-0 on July 21.
Shiner will play in the Junior League World Series this Sunday through Aug. 6 in Kirkland, Wash.

Championship
With a 10-5 lead in the top of the sixth, Charlotte Hairell hit a grand slam over the center-field wall, also scoring Amara Cuevas, Eastyn Pohler and Avery Colman.
West Mesa managed to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning but could not fully get back into the game.
Shiner scored three runs in the top of the first — Cuevas tripled in Ally Trojcak; Pohler hit a double to send Cuevas home and Colman hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field to score Pohler.
In the second inning, Colman doubled and Pohler scored on the throw; Colman later scored on a throw when Hairell hit a double.
In the third square, Andi Mikulencak and Cuevas each scored on a steal of home.
In the bottom of the fifth, West Mesa plated five runs.
To start the top of the sixth, Pohler was hit by the pitch with bases loaded to score Mikulencak for a 10-5 Shiner lead.
For Shiner at the plate, Trojcak was 4-for-5, three runs, two doubles and one stolen base.
Hairell finished 3-for-3, grand slam and five total RBI.
Colman hit 3-for-4, two runs, three RBI, double and one stolen base.
Cuevas swung 2-for-3, three runs, triple, two RBI and one stolen base.
Mikulencak was 2-for-4, two runs, one double and one stolen base.
Reese Lyons was 2-for-3; Pohler was 1-for-2, three runs, two RBI and a double; Addison Ulcak was 1-for-4.
Pohler pitched six innings with three runs on five hits, four walks and six strikeouts; Colman worked one inning, three hits, five runs and seven strikeouts.

Hairell (2-for-2, one run, five RBI) and Pohler (2-for-2, three runs, three RBI) each had a home run in Shiner’s 19-0 win over Lake Charles to advance to the title game.
Shiner scored eight runs in the second inning and nine more in the third.
Shiner opened the contest with two runs.
Also for Shiner, Cuevas was 2-for-3, three runs, one RBI; Colman hit 2-for-3, two runs; Lyons batted 2-for-2, one run.
Ulcak hit 1-for-3, one run, double, RBI and stolen base.
Patricia Price was 1-for-1, two runs, one RBI and two stolen bases.
Dawn Bishop was 1-for-1, two runs.
Kendyl Boehm scored one run and stole two bases.
Pohler pitched the whole game with three hits, three walks and six strikeouts.
