St. Paul, Shiner football: Cards host Eagles; Comanches sail to meet Pirates

St. Paul hosts Geneva Boerne while Shiner is at Poth this week.
Geneva Boerne at SP
The Cardinals will look to stay on the winning path as they close out the home stand by hosting Geneva Boerne Eagles at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
The Eagles are 3-0 including a 48-6 win over Sacred Heart.
They are scoring 48.6 points per game and are yielding 18.6 points a game.
The Eagles lean more towards throwing the ball as 60 percent of their offensive plays so far have been passes.
Quarterback Caleb Quitadamo has completed 41-of-55 passes for 790 yards, 14 touchdowns and one interception. His favorite target is Reid Anderhold who has 293 yards on 12 receptions and seven touchdowns. Chase Doran has 212 yards on a dozen grabs and three touchdowns.
“They have a really explosive offense,” Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “They have a good quarterback who can throw the football.”
The Eagles like to take the long shots downfield instead of throwing shorter passes.
“We have to take away their ability to make a big play with the long passes by forcing Quitadamo to throw underneath a lot and we also have to pressure him,” Wachsmuth said.
Geneva can still run the football and are led by Shae McNew (20-131, one touchdown) and Quitadamo (15-112, two touchdowns).
“They will come out in odd front and occasionally bring the safety close to the line of scrimmage. They will run man coverage in the secondary,” Wachsmuth said. “Their defensive line is not as big as Bloomington’s but they are not small either. In our games so far, I felt we’ve left some points on the field. We are able to drive the ball well but we make crucial mistakes with penalties or turnovers. We have to eliminate those negative plays.”
Doran is the leading tackler with 21 total tackles and two tackles for loss.
Shiner at Poth
The Comanches close out their road trip at Poth at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.
“Poth will be similar to what we’ve seen from their teams in the past,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “They have good size on their lines and they play hard.”
The Pirates are 2-0 and have put up exactly 41 points in each of their first two games and have yielded a total of 13 points (6.5 points a game).
“They have a good quarterback in Payton Helford who can make plays with his arm and his feet.  They have also good running backs in Aidan Pena and Braden Arruda. We will need a plan to stop those two as well. We have to tackle well.”
Shiner’s key to scoring plenty of points will be to have a strong push up front against a larger defensive line and to stay on blocks better.
“We can have a lots of success but it will not be easy. Driving the ball and not having turnovers will be key as well,” Boedeker said.
In last year’s game, Shiner won 41-19 and has won three of the last four meetings between the schools.
