Shiner, St. Paul football:Comanches host Boling; Cards travel to Katy

Shiner will play its next two games at home, starting with Boling. The Cardinals travel to Katy this week before having an open date on Sept. 25.
Boling at Shiner
The Comanches (3-0) host Boling (1-2) to close out non district and start a two-game home stand.
The Bulldogs score an average of 11.0 points per game and cede 23.6 points a game.
“We are anticpating another physical game between two teams who like to run the football,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Once again, the battle up front will be crucial, especially when the Comanches have the football.
“They like to move around and slant a lot,” Boedeker said. “Good communication among our offensive line will be key.”
Some of Boling’s running plays will be familiar to Shiner.
“They run a toss play which looks a little like ours. They also run the veer with different blocking schemes,” Boedeker said. “Boling will throw some play-action passes so discipline and reading our keys on defense will be important.”
Shiner expects  running backs Jerren Salinas and Trenton Ross to have the majority of the carries.
“Salinas is their main guy running the ball and Ross is a very good back as well,” Boedeker said.
The teams have met four times in the past, most recently in 2005. The Comanches led the series 3-1 and have outscored Boling  107-47 (26.75-11.75).
Boling has played two of Shiner’s district opponents, defeating Weimar 14-6 and losing to Ganado 27-12. Their most recent game was a 38-7 loss to Shiner’s Lavaca County neighbor Hallettsville.
St. Paul at Katy St. John XXIII
After two weeks at home, the Cardinals (1-2) hit the road with trip to Katy St. John XXIII.
The Lions are currently 0-4 on the season.
St. John XXIII has had a rough season so far on the offensive side, scoring just a safety and one touchdown in their four games, suffering two shut outs. The Lions have yielded 44.5 points a game.
“They are struggling too but it is a home game for them,” Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “We are coming off a tough game last week and are looking to get back on track.”
St. Paul will see a more run-oriented team this week in the Lions.
Running back Logan Khoury will be the main ball carrier for St. John XXIII.
“We need to stop their run game and make them throw,” Wachsmuth said.
Linebacker Kai Harm will lead the Lions defensive effort.
The Cardinals offense will look to be better up front and execute well.
“We need to eliminate mistakes and do better on how we block,” Wachsmuth said.
St. John XXIII has crossed path with a several teams that have played or will play Shiner — they opened with Frassati Catholic School who the Cardinals scrimmaged, and have also taken on two of St. Paul’s district opponents in Tomball Rosehill Christian and Northland Christian.
The Lions will play Victoria St. Joseph in the week after playing St. Paul.
The Cardinals and Lions have played each other four times with each side taking two wins.
In 2024, the Lions won 42-14 and last season St. Paul returned the favor with a 44-0 win.
