Joe Kalina

Joseph “Joe” Louis Kalina, 80, of Shiner, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Joe was born on August 28, 1946, in Praha, to Alois J. and Lillie Stryk Kalina. He attended Praha School through the eighth grade and later graduated from Bishop Forest High School. Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged.
Following his military service, Joe worked for Kemlon Products in Engle, Texas. He later moved to Houston, where he began a career with General Electric in gas turbine repair. His work took him to various states before he eventually transitioned to working in the shop.
On August 10, 1975, Joe married Patricia Wagner, and together they made their home in Houston for more than 40 years. Although they lived in the city, Joe and Patricia remained closely connected to the country, traveling back every couple of weeks to visit family and attend dances. Joe especially enjoyed raising cattle and took great pleasure in feeding and checking on them.
In his spare time, Joe enjoyed watching baseball, basketball, and football. He and Patricia also shared a love of traveling and enjoyed taking vacations together throughout the years.
Joe was a man of deep Catholic faith. He prayed the Holy Rosary daily and was rarely without a rosary tucked safely in his pocket. His faith remained an important part of his life, and he found comfort in prayer, visits to church, and attending Mass.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Wagner Kalina; sisters, Ann Janda, Mary Jane Muras, Benigna Gerdes and husband Kenneth, Celine Kalina and Ursula Price; brother, Francis Kalina and wife Carole; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alois J. and Lillie Stryk Kalina; his grandparents; and brother, Gerald Kalina.
A rosary was recited at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 11, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jacob Mendoza officiating. Deacon Joe Machacek assisted.
Interment followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were American Legion members David Muehlstein, Ed Neubauer, Ronnie Leck, Anthony Fikac, Reginald Guertin and Anthony Spann.
