Jimmy Welfel Sr.

Jimmy Joseph Welfel, Sr., 87, of Shiner, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, 2026. 
He was born on March 28, 1939, in the Charlottenburg and Oak Grove area to Adolph and Petronila Tousek Welfel. Jimmy’s father passed away when he was only six years old, and from an early age, he and his siblings were called upon to help support their family. Those early years helped shape the strong work ethic that would remain with Jimmy throughout his life.
Jimmy began working at Janak’s Nursery at a young age before going to work for Kaspar Wire Works, where he dedicated 49 years before retiring. He was an exceptionally hardworking man who took great pride in providing for his family, and he instilled that same strong work ethic in his children.
Even when he was not at work, Jimmy was rarely one to sit still. He maintained a half-acre garden, planting crops in both the spring and fall. He raised nearly every vegetable imaginable and often counted on his children to help harvest the produce, much of which would later be canned and enjoyed by the family.
Jimmy loved hunting and fishing whenever the opportunity arose. He and his faithful dog, Rowdy, frequently enjoyed deer hunting trips in East Texas, fishing the waters of Port O’Connor with his son, Jimmy, Jr. These outings provided Jimmy with many treasured memories and stories to share.
Although Jimmy was firm while raising his children, beneath that firmness was a heart of gold. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and would do just about anything for a friend in need. Jimmy also had a delightful sense of humor. He loved telling good jokes, teasing those close to him, and sharing laughter with his family and friends.
Jimmy was also an excellent cook. His stew was especially celebrated for its delicious flavor, and his homemade pies and jelly were family favorites. Whether he was tending his garden, preparing something in the kitchen, hunting, fishing, or simply spending time with those he loved, Jimmy found happiness in the simple things in life.
Above all, Jimmy deeply loved his family. He cherished the time they spent together and especially delighted in making memories with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jimmy is survived by his loving family: daughters, Barbara Kubecka and Jo Ann Nugent; son, Jimmy Welfel, Jr. and wife Elda; grandchildren, Eric Grosenbacher and wife Laurie, Kendall Welfel and wife Elizabeth, Jami Bryce and husband Brandon, Samantha Poenitzsch and husband Josh, and Christopher Moore; four great-grandchildren; sister, Annie Kremling and husband Edwin; brother, Victor Welfel and wife Dorothy; as well as numerous extended family members and friends. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Petronila Tousek Welfel; sister, Martha Tietjen; and brothers, Henry, Robert, Dennis, and Jerry Welfel.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, September 25 at Shiner Funeral Home. 
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. in the Shiner Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Kay Johnson officiating. 
Interment will follow at Shiner Cemetery. 
Serving as pallbearers will be Eric Grosenbacher, Kendall Welfel, Josh Poenitzsch, Ted Welfel, Charlie Migl and Adolph Pavlicek.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shiner Police Department or the Shiner Lutheran Church Bereavement Committee.
