St. Paul football: Cardinals tear apart Lions 60-0

The Cardinals played the Lions but played as bold as lions as they tore Katy St. John XXIII apart 60-0 Friday in Katy.
St. Paul (2-2) produced 302 rushing yards with a big performance from Casen Watts who ran for 113 yards and three touchdowns. Jack Ehrig had 41 yards and one touchdown while Donnie Jones IV ran for 30 yards and a pair of touchdowns; Andy Nunez added one rushing touchdown. 
The Cardinals completed 4-of-7 passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns: Tyler Pendley was 2-for-2 for 78 yards and one touchdown while Elijah Rodriguez was 2-of-3 for one touchdown.
Gabe Darilek had a 41-yard touchdown reception while Nunez caught one pass for 37 yards and Jacob Arriola had a 3-yard touchdown catch.
St. Paul’s defense was equally impressive, forcing five punts, intercepting one pass and recovering one fumble while limiting the Lions to negative 17 yards overall and one first down.
Arriola was the leading tackler with eight tackles, five assists and three tackles for loss. Ehrig had a fumble recovery, and Deuce Blaschke and Carter Chilek each one sack.
Cardinals started hot with 27 first-quarter points: Jones IV opened scoring with a 7-yard run with 8:20 to go in the first quarter, followed by Ehrig’s 33-yard run at 7:00, Darilek’s 41-yard touchdown catch from Pendley at 4:04 and Watts 44-yard run with 32 seconds left. Chilek made three of four point-after kicks.
In the second period, Jones IV had a 6-yard run at 8:46, Nunez scored on a 1-yard run at 5:01 and Watts had a 7-yard run with 42 seconds left for a 47-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Watts scored on a 23-yard run at 5:16 and Rodriguez hit Arriola for a 3-yard touchdown pass with just over four minutes left in the game.
