City Park receives grant, improvements to be made

More updates have been given on the Texas Parks and Wildlife grant the city received for park improvements.The grant is $750,000 and has been in the works for a couple of years now. Currently, the city has already gone out for bids. The improvements are slated to start this summer.

Council amends animal ordinance

The Yoakum City Council amended an ordinance regarding livestock and fowl at the May 13 meeting.The previous ordinance allowed for 20 fowl in the city limits.

City Council discusses park grant

The Yoakum City Council has opted to cancel operations for the Yoakum City Pool given its current condition at the March 11 meeting.This has been in discussion for the last two city council meetings.

Yoakum City Council discusses RV Park regulations

Discussion was made on the HUB City Recreational Vehicles (RV) Park at the Yoakum City Council meeting Feb. 11.Aaron Boxer, a selfproclaimed expert on RV Parks, urged the council to revise their policy for the park.

City Council receives request from Yoakum Garden Club

The City of Yoakum heard a request from the Yoakum Garden Club about potentially having a community garden within city limits at the Jan. 14 meeting.“We would like to establish a community garden within the city limits on city property,” Yoakum Garden Club representative Cynthia Mucala said.

Council approves new downtown lights

The Yoakum City Council approved a request from the Yoakum Area Chamber of Commerce regarding the replacement of downtown string lights at the Oct. 8 meeting. This is in preparation for Christmas on the Grand Dec. 6-7.

Yoakum sets preliminary tax rate

The Yoakum City Council approved a proposed tax rate of 20.182 cents per $100 of taxable property for fiscal year 2024-25 at the Aug. 21 budget workshop meeting.Last year’s rate was 12.023 cents per $100 of taxable property. No election is required unless petitioned by voters.

City Council hears school zone concern

The Yoakum City Council heard a request from a concerned citizen regarding the placement of a school zone area on East Gonzales St. at the Aug. 13 meeting.Harvey Jenkins argued because the Learning Tree, 124 E. Gonzales St., is located in the area that a school zone sign should be put into place.
