Yoakum sets preliminary tax rate

The Yoakum City Council approved a proposed tax rate of 20.182 cents per $100 of taxable property for fiscal year 2024-25 at the Aug. 21 budget workshop meeting.Last year’s rate was 12.023 cents per $100 of taxable property. No election is required unless petitioned by voters.

City Council hears school zone concern

The Yoakum City Council heard a request from a concerned citizen regarding the placement of a school zone area on East Gonzales St. at the Aug. 13 meeting.Harvey Jenkins argued because the Learning Tree, 124 E. Gonzales St., is located in the area that a school zone sign should be put into place.

Yoakum prepares for cell tower

A new cell tower is being built in the City of Yoakum.The tower will be placed across from Block 2 next to 701 Front Street.This is being built at the behest of AT&T and will also be able to accommodate Verizon and T Mobile.“The company that’s building this is City Switch,” Mayor Carl O’ Neill said.

Council hears Colored City Cemetery update

The Yoakum City Council heard an update and presentation from the Yoakum City Colored Cemetery at the June 11 meeting.One of the latest additions to the cemetery includes a new interactive QR code folks can scan which will tell others where the name of the person’s grave is located.

Michael Mitchell named as new city manager

Yoakum City Council officials have hired a new city manager. Michael Mitchell will begin his term as City Manager on July 8. He was born and raised in Jersey Village just outside Houston. He spent 11 years serving on a school board in the city of Goldthwaite between Abilene and Austin.

Yoakum run-off election results

The results are in for the Yoakum City Council elections. For Yoakum City Council, there were two open spots for Place 2 and Place 4. Winning the spot for Place 2 is Daniel Driskell. He received 208 votes while his opponent, Jay Cassell, received 196 votes.

Yoakum run-off election begins Saturday

The run-off election for the Yoakum City Council begins this Saturday, June 15.Council approved the election at the May 14 City Council meeting. Those running include Place 4 candidates Mitchell Franz and Vanita Cheeves and Place 2 candidates Daniel Driskell and Jay Cassell.

Council approves broadband agreement

The Yoakum City Council approved an agreement for the use of poles and rightsof-way at the May 14 meeting. Rise Broadband aims to use these for the installation of fiber lines.Rise Broadband is installing fiber lines in smaller cities in the Houston and San Antonio area.

Council tables EMS requests

The Yoakum City Council has tabled a couple of requests made by Yoakum Emergency Medical Services at the April 9 meeting.One of these requests were for the addition of two full-time employees for the EMS department.
