The Yoakum Shape Shop is preparing for the 12th Annual Dash for Downs (DFD) 5K Fun Run. The fun run will be on May 11 at 8 a.m. and participants will be running through downtown Yoakum.

The money raised from this run will be benefiting the Down Syndrome Foundation of South Texas. The foundation teaches others about Down Syndrome by building public awareness and acceptance of the abilities of individuals with special needs. They also provide seminars and workshops from professionals that work with individuals with Down Syndrome.

Kristy Svec, owner of the Yoakum Shape Shop, organizes this event and one of the inspirations for starting this stems from having a child with Down Syndrome.

“We want others to see that those with special needs are amazing and capable just like everyone else,” Svec said. “Our goal for our daughter, Macy, is to feel valued and loved and to know that she can make a difference in society. We want to see her grow up and be like anyone else. This type of event is important because it brings awareness in the City of Yoakum. We really appreciate the community involvement and all those that support.”

DFD started in 2011 and around 100 local businesses sponsor this each year.

"It’s amazing how many come and participate and how many businesses want to donate,” Svec said.

DFD has sponsored various educational seminars, hosted summer music therapy programs for individuals with disabilities, and supports the special needs cheerleading group called “The Sparkles.” They also award scholarships to graduating seniors in Yoakum and the surrounding counties.

Typically, DFD has about 300 participants. The organization raises between $8,000 to $12,000 each year. There are also around 75 volunteers who assist with DFD. Some of the volunteers cheer the runners on, hand out waters, and assist with timing the race.

“Without our volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to put this on,” Svec said.

Medals will be awarded to the first, second, and third male and females in each age division. There are seven categories. Winners of the kids fun run will receive gift cards to Dairy Queen.

There is a $20 fee for runners and $10 for children. Those wanting to register may contact the Yoakum Shape Shop at 361-239-9593.
