Early voting in primaries starts Tuesday, Feb. 20

Early voting in the Republican and Democrat Party primaries will begin Tuesday, Feb. 20 with all voting taking place at the Lavaca County Annex Building. The Annex is located at 412 N. Texana St. in Hallettsville. The election administrator’s office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.

Local landmark hits a milestone anniversary

Hoffer’s Drive In Grocery in Hallettsville is celebrating its 70th Anniversary this month. The Drive In opened on Feb. 12, 1954, with only two employees: Nick Hoffer, owner and James Kouba, manager, both now deceased.

Americans lost a record $10 billion to scammers, fraud

Newly released numbers from the Federal Trade Commission last week indicated American consumers lost $10 billion to scams and fraud in 2023, up from $9 billion the year before. It’s a staggering number, truly, especially when you consider Americans lost just $3.

Candidate filings end Friday

The filing deadline for candidates to run for positions on the Hallettsville ISD Board of Trustees, the Hallettsville City Council and the Lavaca Hospital District Board of Directors ends Friday, Feb. 16 with each entity reporting candidates who have filed thus far.

Koerth appointed treasurer

The Lavaca County Commissioners’ Court met in a regular meeting Monday and approved the appointment of Tammy Koerth to replace Karen Bludau as county treasurer. The appointment of Koerth came about due to longtime county treasurer Karen Bludau announcing her retirement last month.

YCH team participates in heart walk

Yoakum Community Hospital (YCH) is a proud supporter of the American Heart Association. The hospital’s hardworking employees raised money for the worthy cause with a team that participated in the 6th Annual Crossroads Heart and Stroke Walk on Feb. 3.

YJHS students named to All-Region Band

Members of the Yoakum Junior High School (YJHS) Symphonic and Concert Bands competed against students from 16 other schools for a position in one of three AllRegion Bands. The YJHS Band had 18 students make the All-Region Band.

Livestock Show gives out herdsman award

Winners of the Hallettsville livestock show herdsman awards have been announced.

The Hallettsville Lions Club met Monday, Jan. 22 at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, with Lion president Charles Neumeyer presiding over the meeting.
