The Shiner Comanches and St. Paul Cardinals played their first scrimmages last week. The Cardinals played at Nixon on Thursday while Shiner traveled to Tidehaven on Friday.

YOUNG COMANCHES GET FIRST TASTE OF VARSITY
The Shiner Comanches’ varsity newcomers got their first taste of varsity action against the Tigers.
“We got off to a slow start but finished well,” Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “It was a sign of our young kids getting comfortable and up to speed with varsity-level competition.”
The Shiner first-team offense scored one touchdown and the second-team offense scored twice.
Tidehaven scored two touchdowns.
“We need to improve our tackling and blocking,” Boedeker said.
The Comanches will host Burton today, starting at 6 p.m for junior varsity and the varsity will follow.
Fans are asked to bring either a white towel or a bottle of laundry detergent to donate to the athletic program.
The Comanches will open the regular season at 7:30 at home to Hallettsville.

CARDS MOVE THE BALL WELL AGAINST NIXON
The St. Paul Cardinals scrimmaged at Nixon on Thursday.
“We did some good things and there is room for improvement,” St. Paul head coach Mike Jackson said. “I thought our starting group played well.”
Although the Cardinals did not score, they did move the ball well on offense.
“We moved the ball well which was good since we are putting in new things on offense,” Jackson said.
The Cardinals defense will be working on big plays after giving up several to the Mustangs.
“We allowed too many “chunk” plays on defense. We gave up one or two big passes,” Jackson said.
The Cardinals will scrimmage at Weimar at 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday).
Cardinals will open at Flatonia on Aug. 25 at 7:30.
