St. Paul hosts Bloomington to start a two-game home stand while the Comanches make the drive to Orange Grove to start a two-game road trip.

St. Paul
The Cardinals host Bloomington to kick off a two-game home streak.
The Bobcats started off the season with a win, shutting down Woodsboro 33-0.
St. Paul came up short to St. Joseph 21-12 in the Cards’ opener on Aug. 21 and traveled to Austin on Friday for a scheduled game against St. Andrews Episcopal but the game was called off because of weather and was not rescheduled.
“Bloomington won their opener and it is always good for a team to get going that way,” St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “They are going to come into this game with confidence.”
The ‘Cats run the option of the flexbone formation.
“You don’t see a lot of the old Naval Academy-style flexbone these days,” Wachsmuth said. “We have to be able to read the keys and be disciplined. We have to defend what is presented to us.”
Bloomington’s primary ball carriers will be quarterback Don Reyes, fullback Jordan Longoria, and running backs Felipe Delarosa and Aaron Flores.
Bloomington’s defense will come out in a split, likely with an eight-man front or goal line formation.
“Our offense has to play consistently and avoid negative plays,” Wachsmuth said. “We have to score when we get opportunities.”
The Cardinals will conclude the home stand next week with Geneva Boerne.
Shiner at
Orange Grove
Shiner begins a two-game road trip with Orange Grove tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
The Comanches and Orange Grove have never played each other in football.
“We’re not familiar with them but seeing them on film, they are a good opponent,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
The Bulldogs defeated Corpus Christi London 21-7 in the season opener.
Daniel Bahn led the run game with 145 yards and one touchdown while Ander Schmidt added 49 yards on five carries and one touchdown.
Quarterback Hughes Klatt was 5-of-12 passing for 38 yards and a touchdown to Daniel Martinez.
Trace Fowler led the defense with 12 tackles and Damian Bennett added 11.
“Offensively, they will run out of the shotgun a lot but will get under center,” Boedeker said. “They are very physical up front and like to run the football. Bahn rushed for 1,200 yards last season and he runs hard. Klatt is very athletic and runs the zone read very well.
“We will have to have a good plan to stop Bahn and Klatt.”
The ‘Dogs defense runs a 4-3.
“Their line is really big and they come off the ball well,” Boedeker said. “We are going to have to make sure we get our pads down and get a good push on the line of scrmmage. This game will be another good battle in the trenches.”
Next week, Shiner is back on the road against the Poth Pirates.
