Shiner, St. Paul football: Marquee matchups on hand this week for both Shiner teams

Both Shiner teams will have extremely-challenging district games this week. Central Texas Christian visits St. Paul while the Comanches travel to Ganado.
Temple CTC at St. Paul
The Cardinals will look to take their current swing of momentum in this week’s home game with a very stout Temple Central Texas Christian team.
“CTC is good team and this game will be a challenge,” Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “Their defense is very stout and they do a lot of things on offense. For us, we are starting to get things together.
The Lions are putting 35.8 points a game on the scoreboard and allowing 27.16 points per game.
CTC runs a lot of formations from three-back to empty and more.
“Our defense will just need to keep things as simple as possible,” Wachsmuth said.
Quarterback Coulter Ragsdale has hit 55-of-96 passes for 830 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Nicolas Istre is the leading rusher with 736 yards on 116 carries and 10 touchdowns.
Princeton Schneider is the leading receiver with 365 yards and six touchdowns.
Leading tackler is Hunter Evans who had 39 tackles, 29 assists, 10 solo and two tackles for loss; Schneider had three interceptions on the year.
The Cardinals had a lot of success moving the football in their previous game against Sacred Heart.
“Our offense needs to do what we did in our last game and that is to control the ball. We got better at finishing off drives,” Wachsmuth said.
The Cardinals have won three in a row including both district games.
“Coming into a tough game on a win streak helps boost our confidence,” Wachsmuth said. “And we need that as we get ready for a big game against the Lions who are also 2-0 in district. The winner of this game will be a good place in district standings.”
Shiner at Ganado
The Comanches have a great test this week on the road to Ganado.
“This is going to be a good game. Ganado is a great team and we will need to play well,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
The Indians are 4-2 overall and 2-0 in district. They are scoring 39.3 points per game and are allowing 22.3 points per game.
Their two losses are to Class 3A teams, East Bernard and Brazos.
Ganado leans toward the run with 258.3 yards per game but is effective throwing the ball with 156.5 yards a game for 414.8 total yards a game.
Running back Logan Bures is the key threat with 1,002 yards on 84 carries, 11.9 average per carry, 167 yards a game and 15 touchdowns.
“They will move Logan all over the field and give him the ball a lot. He is the chief runner but they will involve him in the passing game,” Boedeker said. “We need to have a good defensive plan and make sure we are aware of him.”
Landyn Arriaga had 426 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.
The Indians have used two quarterbacks to throw the football — Kyle Stancik has completed 35-of-48 passes for 626 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception, Arriaga has hit 24-of-47 for 313 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
Cade Nixon is the chief receiver with 16 catches for 243 yards and five touchdowns.
Leading the defense is Kole Bures who has 53 tackles, 39 solo, 14 assists, four tackles for loss and one sack. Tyler Henderson had four sacks; Nixon had three interceptions and Bures had recovered three fumbles.
“Ganado is very good on the defensive line and our offensive line will need to stay on blocks,” Boedeker said. “We must put lots of drives together, have no turnovers and minimize mistakes.”
