Shiner volleyball: Lady Comanches win Silver bracket
The Shiner varsity volleyball team won the Silver Bracket and posted a record of 4-4 in the Schulenburg Tournament last Thursday through Saturday.
Harlee Sevcik was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Thursday pool play
Shiner split their Pool C games with Nixon and East Bernard, and lost in two sets in their crossover game with Pool D member Brazos. Shiner placed second in Pool C.
Shiner 2, NS 1
The Lady Comanches won the first of their two Pool C games with a 2-1 (25-16, 8-25, 25-22) win over Nixon-Smiley.
Sevcik posted seven kills.

Shiner won the opening set but then lost two to fall to East Bernard 16-25, 25-20, 25-16 to close out Pool C play.
Shiner led 12-8 after 20 points to open the match. A trio of Sevcik kills and a Kiera Curtis block gave the Lady Comanches a bigger lead at 18-9. The Brahmarettes were able to pull a few points back to 18-11.
Shiner then outscored them 7-5 to take the set with assistance from Sevcik kill and block, and a Kayden Smith kill.
In the second game, the teams battled to a 6-6 tie after 12 initial points. East Bernard took the lead; the Lady Comanches forced ties at 9-9, 10-10 and 12-12 with aces by Smith and Addie Prove, and a kill by Sevcik.
East Bernard outscored Shiner 6-1 for an 18-13 lead and both teams scored seven points the rest of the set for a 25-20 Brahmarette win.
In the third game, Shiner recorded the first three points and led 7-3 after 10 points with a Taylor Kocian ace and, kills by Lexi Boner and Curtis.
East Bernard rallied and took an 18-13 lead after forcing a tie at 11-11. They then outscored Shiner for a seven-point margin in the third set to take the match 2-1.

Brazos 2, Shiner 0
The Lady Comanches wrapped up the day with a 25-21, 25-22 loss to the Brazos Cougarettes.
Kocian had an ace as the teams shared the first eight points of the match. Kills by Mya Oliver and McKenna Stroud helped give Brazos a 10-5 lead. The Lady Comanches then went on a 6-2 scoring run with kills by Kocian and Smith, and a Tinsley Vasek ace.
Later in the set, Shiner forced a 19-19 tie before Brazos outscored them 6-2 to finish the set, getting a couple of kills from Stroud.
In the second game, Stroud got a kill and served an ace as the Cougarettes led 5-2 after seven points.
After Shiner closed down to 8-6, Brazos went on a 9-3 tear with a kill by Stroud and a couple from Bayleigh Marek.
Brazos looked to be in control with a 20-14 later on but Shiner continued to fight, going on an 8-2 run to tie the game as Smith had an ace, Boner put down a kill and Sevcik got a block. Brazos then scored three straight to end the game and the match.

Friday Pool E play
Shiner went 1-2 in pool E play on Friday.
Shiner 2, Brazos 1
Shiner started Pool E play on Friday the same way it ended Pool D play on Thursday,with a tilt against Brazos.
In the previous day’s match, Brazos swept the Lady Comanches 25-21 and 25-22.
Shiner returned the favor with a 28-26, 25-27, 25-18 win over the Cougarettes.
Brazos led 8-4 after 12 points to open the match; Shiner rallied with a 6-1 run with blocks from Kocian and Boner, a Smith kills and Savannah Durrett ace.
After a 10-10 tie, Shiner outscored Brazos 6-3 for a 16-13 advantage. The squads each recorded four points for a 20-17 Lady Comanche lead. Brazos then went on a 5-2 surge before taking a 24-23 lead. A pair of Smith kills later put Shiner ahead 26-25 and Brazos rallied to tie the set at 26-26 before Shiner scored two straight to win the set.
In the second game, the score was locked at 4-4 after eight points and Brazos scored six of the next eight points. Curtis had a kill and Prove chipped in a couple of aces for ties at 12-12 and 14-14.
A Marie Johnson play later helped the Lady Comanches get up 19-16 and the teams exchanged ties and one-point leads until Brazos scored two straight from a 25-25 deadlock to knot the match at one set each.
In the third game, Kocian had a couple of aces while Sevcik had a kill to give Shiner a 7-2 lead after nine points.
The Cougarettes got within 9-8 and Shiner went on a 8-4 run with four or five kills and and a couple of aces from Smith.
Brazos got within 18-16 before Shiner finished the task with seven of the next nine points with Johnson getting an ace for the set and match winner.

Columbus 2, Shiner 1
After winning a close first set, the Lady Comanches came up short in the end to Columbus 24-26, 25-13, 25-12.
Logan Glueck, Isabella Lowe and Lucy Schobel all had a kill as Columbus had a hot start with an 11-3 lead after 14 points in the opening set.
Shiner trailed for most of the set afterwards but eventually forced a 24-24 tie and then scored two straight points with a Vasek ace and Sevcik kill.
The Lady Cardinals took another 11-3 lead to began the second game followed by a 7-2 Shiner run to get back in the set.
Columbus then went on a 7-0 run and went to win 25-13 for a 1-1 tie in the match.
The teams fought to an early 3-3 tie in the third game and Columbus took a 12-6 lead before a 9-4 run put them ahead 21-10 and from there, they went on a small 4-2 run to end the game and match.

Shiner closed out Friday with a three-set loss to Edna, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-21.

Shiner swept Yoakum to advance to the Silver championship and then beat Brazos for the second time in three matches at the tournament with a two-set win to take the Silver championship.
