St. Paul football: Cardinals victorious over NC 41-14 in district opener

    Carter Chilek rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns while Jack Ehrig ran for 58 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown as the Cardinals opened district with a 41-14 win over Northland Christian Friday at Comanche Stadium.
    Donnie Jones IV ran for a touchdown, and Tyler Pendley was 3-for-3 passing for 96 yards and a 12-yard touchdown pass to Andy Nunez.
    The Cardinals ran the football 21 times for 201 yards and ran 24 plays for 297 total yards.
    St. Paul held Northland Christian to 121 rushing yards, 40 passing yards, 161 total yards and five first downs.
    Ehrig opened scoring with 7:05 left in the opening quarter on a 13-yard run and Chilek added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
    NC took an 8-7 lead with 4:28 mark in the first quarter as Tyler Tannehill scored on a 76-yard run and Reed Eastman scored on a two-point run.
    St. Paul reestablished the lead that it would not surrender with an 8-yard run by Chilek with 45 seconds left in the quarter and he was good on a two-point rush for a 15-8 St. Paul lead.
    St. Paul recorded 12 points in the second quarter — Chilek scored on 15-yard run at 8:42 with the two-point pass no good and Jones IV scored on a 9-yard run with 1:27 left with the point-after no good.
    Pendley hit Nunez with the touchdown pass with 2:50 left in the third and Chilek kicked the point after.
    Ehrig fielded a punt at his 43 and went the distance to give the Cardinals a 41-8 led with 8:55 left in the game.
    NC scored on the last play of the game on a 40-yard pass from Terrence Mayers to Kelton Whittaker and the two-point play was no good.
