The Yoakum Bulldogs came into last Friday night's game as underdogs but came out as "top dogs" defeating the Hallettsville Brahmas 34-21 in the 78th installment of the Lavaca County Showdown.

Yoakum cross country: Martinez wraps up CC career at state meet

Yoakum’s lone state cross-country runner, senior Gisela Martinez, placed No. 60 in the 3A two miler with a time of 13 minutes, 18.8 seconds, mile-one split of 6:30.7 and a pace of 6:39 a mile. This was Martinez’s fourth time to compete at the state meet as part of the team or individual.

Yoakum’s senior youth football squad concluded their near-perfect season with a Golden Crescent Youth Football League Super Bowl loss to Calhoun County in Hallettsville Saturday night.

Shiner football: Shiner outphysicals Kenedy 56-12

The Shiner Comanches went up against a bigger and physical opponent in Kenedy to close out the regular season.
The Comanches matched the physical play and held Kenedy to two scores while scoring enough of their own in a 56-12 win over the Lions Friday night at Comanche Stadium.

Shiner cross country: Lady Comanches placed No. 14 at state meet

The Shiner Lady Comanches cross-country team scored 284 points and placed No. 14 after running in the 2A girls 3,200-meter race Friday at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock.
Shiner was led by senior Riley Rainosek who placed No. 64 in 14 minutes, 1.8 seconds.

The Shiner family took on Thrall Tigerettes Thursday in the area round at Smithville High School and gave over maximum effort.

The Shiner Junior Varsity Purple team finished the season with a 4-12 record.
The Lady Comanches beat Ganad 25-11, 25-15 Sept. 23; lost to Weimar 20-25, 25-11, 25-18 Sept. 27; fell to Schulenburg 25-18, 25-17 Oct. 5, and turned around and beat Schulenburg 25-11, 25-22 on Oct. 7.

Shiner volleyball: Lady Comanches win first-round match in three against Yorktown

VICTORIA — The Lady Comanches made the plays necessary for downing the Yorktown Kitty Kats in the volleyball bi-district round.
Shiner won in three games, 25-10, 25-17, 25-16 Nov. 1 at Victoria ISD’s District Event Center.
