DLSEC honors graduates
The DeWitt-Lavaca Special Education Cooperative (DLSEC) graduation celebration honored local students from five school districts Friday, May 20, in the Blue Gym at Yoakum High School.
Many families and school staff in attendance applauded and snapped pictures while Stephanie Gonzales, Derek Hattenbach, Daetron Mathis, Israel Vasques, Leigh Ann Darilek and Jaylen Gomez were recognized as graduates.
“It’s just an outstanding day and an outstanding event. We’re so honored to be a part of it,” Yoakum ISD Superintendent Tom Kelley said during the event. “To our graduates, thank you for letting us be a part of your education. Thank you for being a part of our lives and allowing us to be a part of your lives.”
After the ceremony, attendees enjoyed refreshments and cake while celebrating the graduating students’ accomplishments.
“I’ve been here since most of them started as three-year-olds,” said DLSEC Executive Director Brian Billstein following the celebration. “I’m excited that we recognize them. A lot of them will go on to walk with their classmates, and those who can’t, they at least have a ceremony and
(get) the opportunity to have the superintendents and principals present their awards. So, it’s just an exciting day.”
