Council tables talks on Yoakum Little League Park

A spokesman from Yoakum Little League asked city aldermen to approve a funding reallocation last week to make available some $10,000 in reserve funds to upgrade their restroom facilities at the city’s ballfields ahead of the upcoming baseball season.
Raymond Rosas, president of the local Little League board of directors, made the request at the Tuesday, Dec. 12, Yoakum council meeting.
“We had the funds at the beginning of last year to build new restrooms, but with the cost of material and labor going up, we went a little over budget,” Rosas said. “We requested partitions for the restrooms so we can put it in for the upcoming season. These are improvements for the old restrooms. We did build new restrooms last year, but all restrooms will be brand new once we complete it.”
Rosas also asked the council assist with fencing modifications at Softball Field No. 2.
“We need to replace the fence around that field regardless, but we want to move it in so it’s more for the minor girls and major girls,” Rosas said. “This will make it so the girls won’t have to run 300 feet to the other fence.”
“We also don’t want to install a temporary fence because that’s a lot of work,” he said. “There are also safety concerns as the poles aren’t very sturdy, and we don’t want anybody getting hurt. It has been many years since that fence was replaced. So, it’s about time we do that for the field.”
The fence work will cost about $10,200 more.
After hearing from him on both items, councilmembers opted to table both items until the new year.
