This week will be a review of the Tribune Herald’s final four months of 2024 featuring September through December.
SEPTEMBER
Hallettsville native Drew Haas, along with his partner Drake Vilem, of Midland won the survivor title on the Netflix show “Outlast”. The two defeated 16 other teams in a survival of the fittest in the Alaskan wilderness… The Brahmas opened their season with a win over Shiner, while the Indians lost to Schulenburg in their season opener… Long-time Sacred Heart Catholic Church pastor Msgr. John Peters retired after serving 30 years as the church’s leader. He also celebrated his 50th anniversary in the priesthood… The Lavaca County Commissioners’ Court enacted the burn ban for the county. It was the second time this year for the burn ban being implemented … The month turned out to be the driest month so far in the year with only 0.37 inches of rain falling during the month. Daytime highs averaged nearly 95 degrees, while low averages came in at 72.
OCTOBER
Hallettsville High School held its homecoming ceremonies at the Brahma-Rockport Fulton game with Brenna Scott crowned the queen and Preston Wagner, king… Lady Brahmas Darby Phillips and Elizabeth Felcman advanced to the UIL Class 3A Region IV Cross Country meet… Sacred Heart seniors Annika Brooks and Marcus Seger were named Sweetheart and Beau of the Indian Marching Band… The Texas Barnstormers’ Museum hosted its Annual Fly-In… The Hallettsville High School Thunder Herd received straight Division I’s to advance to the regional marching contest… The Friench Simpson Memorial Library underwent renovations that improved the book drop-off at the library… The Indianettes placed fourth, while the Indians finished fifth in team results at the TAPPS Cross Country Meet… October topped last month in lack of rainfall zero amount falling throughout the 31 days and tying a 90- year record set in 1934. Highs averaged 92 degrees, while lows averaged 65.
NOVEMBER
Lady Brahma cross country runner Elizabeth Felcman competed at the UIL Class 3A Cross Country state meet. She finished 48 out of 152 entrants… Hallettsville Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture executive director Jo Ann Shimek announced her resignation from the position… Sacred Heart Catholic High School held their homecoming at the Indians-Conroe Covenant game with Brianna Clark named queen and Hudson Kutac, king… The U.S. presidential election was held with Republican Donald Trump winning his second term… Commissioners’ Court voted to continue with a burn ban for the county… The Indianettes were eliminated from the TAPPS Division IV Volleyball playoffs losing to Faith Academy… Former Brahma and Texas Longhorn running back Jonathon Brooks made his debut in the National Football League.… The Brahmas lost to Franklin in the bi-district round of the Class 3A Div. I football playoffs… The Indians were ousted from the TAPPS Division IV football playoffs losing to Temple South Central Academy… For the third month in a row, the area lacked rainfall with only 1.41 inches falling during November. Daytime highs averaged 81 degrees and lows averaged 57.
DECEMBER
After appearing in only three NFL games, Jonathon Brooks suffered a torn ACL causing him a setback in his football career… Sacred Heart Catholic School athletic director/head football coach, Alex Seydler, submitted his resignation from the school… Margaret Kallus of Hallettsville was presented the Lavaca County Czech Heritage Society award… After losing their first three games of the season, the Shiner Comanches reeled off 12 straight wins to advance to the UIL Class 2A Division II state championship game played at the Cowboys AT&T Stadium in Arlington. In the game, the Comanches saw their quest for a state title end in the last 40 seconds losing to Muenster, 36-29… Indianette Annika Brooks was selected to the TAPPS District 6 all-state volleyball team… The month saw a sparse amount of rain and temperatures remained spring-like with highs in the upper 70’s and lows in the mid-60’s.
