5th Annual Pivo and Kolaches Fest this weekend
Shiner Lions Club also makes improvements to tennis courts
The Shiner Lions Club is gearing up for its 5th annual Pivo and Kolaches Festival .5 K run happening this Saturday, March 28 at Green Dickson Park.
“We have a combination of people coming out and listening to live music,” Lions Club President Sara Giddings said. “We’ll start with registration and have polka music to get everybody fired up. The race itself is a .5 K, so it’s just the interloop at Green Dickson Park. Along that, there will be multiple stops. We have a beer stop, we’ll have a stop where you eat kolaches from Bea’s, there will be a cornhole stop and a hula hoop station.
It’s designed to have multiple stops along the way. It’s meant for fun and it’s not competitive but we do give a prize for first, second and third place as well as a prize for last place. After that, we’ll have a costume contest as part of that and we’ll have live music again as well as bingo and a queen of hearts contest. We’re also raffling off some premium VIP tickets for Cattle Country Fest in Gonzales.”
The event starts at 2 p.m. and will be done around 6:30 or 7 p.m. “Even if you don’t do the .5 K itself, plenty of people like to come watch it and see what the participants are doing,” Giddings said. “The main thing I want people to know is that you can come out and enjoy the music and be there without necessarily having to sign up for the .5 K. You can come out and help support the Lions Club without doing the races.”
Live music will be provided by Kenneth Kristynik and the Lavaca County Line. “I encourage people to attend because it’s a good afternoon of great music and a fun race that nobody takes too seriously,” Giddings said. “It’s also for a great cause. It’s for the Lions Club and we’ll be using these funds to continue to give back to our community.”
The Pivo and Kolaches Fest averages around 120 racers. The people who come are from all over Texas including Galveston and San Antonio. “It’s a good mix of locals and a large mix of people from out of town so it’s a great way to showcase Shiner,” Giddings said.
One of the projects that the Lions Club is working on right now is revamping the tennis courts in town. “In town, we are going to resurface the tennis courts completely and we’ll be making them dual use where it can be used for both tennis and pickleball,” Giddings said. “At the Pivo and Kolaches Fest, I’ll put out the thermometer to show how much we’ve raised.
We’ve raised about $40,000 already and it will take about $90,000 to $100,000 to get it completely resurfaced and cleaned up and have it as dual use. It will be great for the town to clean up that area and clean up the courts and make them look nicer. It’s something that everyone can benefit from.”
These courts are located in town along Avenue E. “We were inspired to do these improvements,” Giddings said. “We are the cleanest little city and the courts as it is is an eye sore and we wanted to give back to our community and make a difference. This will give the kids a good activity that want to use them and we’ll also be helping the aesthetic of the town.”
The Lions Club contributed $15,000 of their own funds for this and they have received a grant for this as well as individual donations. People can still make donations to the Shiner Lions Club Foundation.
Giddings said she hopes to see everyone there this weekend for a fun time.
