Annual HJLS set for Jan. 19-21
Commercial heifer show begins Sunday
The annual Hallettsville Jr. Livestock Show will begin this Sunday, Jan. 14 with the Commercial Heifer portion of the show kicking off the event.
According to Hallettsville FFA advisor, Heath Ressler, the commercial heifer record books are due at 1 p.m. to the HJLS committee at the test location.
Also at one p.m., commercial heifer show participants take part in a test as well as interviews also beginning at this time.
Market show and commercial heifer pen set up will also take place at one p.m. at the William and Alton Allen Exposition Center.
Ressler provided a schedule of events for participants as well as those attending and include:
Thursday, Jan. 18:
No market or breeding livestock, or poultry will be allowed to move in to the show barns on Thursday.
Ressler said scales will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. for check-in weighing only.
Friday, Jan. 19:
On Friday, show animals can start moving with commercial heifer show animals arriving between 7 to 9 a.m.
In addition, also at 7 a.m., the barn will be open for market and breeding halter animals, but no swine.
From 8 to 8:30 a.m., lamb and goat weigh in and sift will take place followed by steer weigh-in and sift.
At 9 to 10:30 a.m., market and breeding swine can arrive and weigh-in along with sifting these animals will take place.
Ressler said all breeding halter heifers are required to be in place by 10:30 a.m.
Broiler check-in and sifting will take place from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and at 11 a.m. commercial heifer judging will begin with no exhibitors present.
At 11:30 a.m., a mandatory market and commercial heifer exhibitor meeting will be held followed by a lunch break from noon to 1 p.m.
In the afternoon, the broiler show/showmanship judging will kick things off at 2 p.m. followed at 3 p.m. with lamb show/showmanship judging.
Goat show/showmanship judging will close out Friday’s portion of the show at 4 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 20:
The show will continue on Saturday morning with the commercial heifer awards and auction taking place beginning at 10 a.m.
A lunch break will be held at noon and steer show is slated to start at one p.m.
Immediately following the steer show, the halter heifer show will take place followed by the cattle showmanship.
At 4 p.m., market swine show judging will be held followed by the breeding gilt show and the swine showmanship.
Ressler said a sale order will be posted at 11 p.m. that evening.
Sunday, Jan. 21:
Starting at 8 a.m. Sunday morning, until 10 a.m., the release of nonsale animals and breeding animals will take place.
According to show officials, animals not removed will be considered terminal and included in the resale lots.
At 10 a.m., a mandatory market and commercial heifer exhibitor meeting will be held along with clean-up, auction setup.
From noon to 1:30 p.m., a market buyer’s social will be held with the market show auction starting at 2 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 22:
A show pen tear down will start at 8 a.m. and parent volunteers are encouraged to speak to a board member for specifics.
