City lowers tax rate, adopts budget

Hallettsville City Council approved a 7.3% year-over-year decrease in the tax rate and adopted the 2022-2023 budget during their Sept. 6 meeting.

Council set the 2022 tax rate at $0.2742 per $100 of property valuation, down for the second consecutive year. The rate passed 4-0 in the absence of Councilperson Place 3 Trent Skelton.

Last Tuesday’s meeting marked the conclusion of a months-long effort to create the City’s budget with a unanimous vote in favor of the proposed budget.

The adopted general fund totaled more than $2.9 million in projected revenues, with the police department listed as the largest expenditure at about $1.1 million. The Water and Light (W&L) fund projected revenue of about $6.4 million. Expenses and revenues for the W&L and general funds canceled out just more than $9.3 million.

The budget summary reported a total with expenses leading expenditures by about $1.2 million. The 2022-2023 budget is available in further detail with comparisons to past budgets online at cityofhallettsville.org/financial-transparency/.
