Council discusses mosquito spraying
The Shiner City Council discussed potential mosquito spraying for the city at the July 7 meeting.
Sergeant Chris Kalina suggested the idea to help alleviate officers who are working or patrolling outside.
“It’s a major distraction,” Kalina said. “We were on a traffic stop one day trying to conduct business and there were many mosquitos biting on us. A lot of the members of the community have talked to me about it and asked me about it.”
The cost would be a little under $18,000. To do the spraying, a person would need a non-commercial vector control license.
The council tabled this to wait for more information.
The second quarter Municipal Court report was also made from Judge Robert Penley. “The key takeaway is that I handed out 20 days jail time this year as opposed to seven at this time from last year,” Penley said.
Other items on the agenda include:
• A new parks supervisor was hired.
• Discussion was made on potentially utilizing the new fire station as an emergency management coordinator location.
• It was reported that the Game and Fish League installed a new picnic area at Green Dickson Park.
• The new drop off location for limbs will be near County Roads 343 and 966 (see page 9).
• Council discussed industrial sewer rates calculations.
