Council gives grant project updates

City Administrator LuAnn Rogers gave a report on ongoing projects at the Moulton City Council meeting on May 13.

“The waterline replacement that we’ve been doing on County Road 291 is now complete,” Rogers said. “The Texas Water Development Board also approved our grant for wastewater improvements.”

Rogers also gave an update on a couple of grants including one from the General Land Office (GLO) and the Texas Department of Emergency Management for a generator for the water plant.

“The water plant grant is in the very beginning stages and is ongoing,” Rogers said. “The Texas GLO grant we’re getting is for the new water well. We plan to drill a new well to add to the wells that we already have.”

A resolution was approved to give Mayor Mark Zimmerman the authority to be the executive officer on that grant to sign paperwork. Council also updated its financial plan for the Texas GLO grant as well.

Council members Adam Nieto and Kelley Moeller and Zimmerman took the oath of office reprising their positions. Craig Hughes was appointed as mayor pro tem.

The Moulton police report showed that a total of 371 calls for service were made. A total of 27 traffic contacts were also made with ten citations being issued and 17 warnings written.

In early April, Police Chief Daniel Beyer attended the Norma’s House fundraiser.

“I assisted at the door taking tickets as I have done for years,” Beyer said. “Norma’s House is a wonderful organization that helps the abused and neglected children of Lavaca and Gonzales counties.”

Beyer also attended a county wide school safety and security meeting in Hallettsville. All the communities and school districts in Lavaca County were represented. Beyer was the only representative from Moulton in attendance. Beyer also said that Moulton is lucky to have quality officers serving the community.

“I am proud of each one of them and the job they do to keep our citizens safe,” Beyer said. “Happy police officers can be your best recruiters, and I am proud to say that we are fully staffed and have several reserve officers wanting to come work for the department.”

Other items on the agenda include:

• Craig Hughes was nominated for the board of directors with the Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission. Jenna Harris was nominated to the general assembly.

• Since the council did not receive any bid for the Scout hut building, the council has directed Public Works to tear it down and remove it.

• Council approved an amendment to the City’s Procurement Policy.
