DeWitt County Historical Commission receives Distinguished Service Award
The DeWitt County Historical Commission received its 23rd award from the Texas Historical Commission (THC) in recognition of its well-balanced preservation program and community engagement initiatives from the County Commissioners’ Court Monday, Sept. 26.
During the meeting, County Judge Daryl Fowler presented the organization’s leaders with the THC 2021 Distinguished Service Award Certificate and expressed gratitude for their efforts in studying the county’s past to inform its future.
“The recognition they received this year was for all the work they did last year during our 175th anniversary of the County of DeWitt. There was a ceremony across the street (from the County Courthouse) with horsedrawn carriages, people in period costumes and so forth,” said Fowler. “There was an ongoing celebration in the City of Cuero and across the county, even into the period costume New Years Eve Ball in Yorktown. (It required) a lot of volunteer hours and attracted a lot of good public relations and great memories. That was just one thing. I do not know what we would do without the group of people that make that up.”
The county judge said the group maintains a variety of history preservation projects, including significant landmarks and documents.
Chairman Peggy Ledbetter thanked the court for their support and encouraged “anybody interested in the fascinating history of DeWitt County” to join the organization as volunteers
