Former Yoakum council member steps down
After meeting in a closed executive session, Yoakum City Council accepted the resignation of Place 2 Council Person Charles L. Hall at the July 11 meeting.
The reason for his resignation was due to personal issues, according to the city. Per the City Charter, Council has 30 days to appoint a replacement or call a special election to fill the position.
Council is opening applications to the community and aims to gather a list of people eligible to serve and interested in being considered. They are specifically asking anyone interested to contact Theresa Bowe at City Hall 361-293-6321 to check their eligibility and place their name on the list. A deadline has been placed as of Friday, July 28 at 5 p.m. for people to do so. Those applying can anticipate making the appointment at the city’s next regular meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Aug. 8 at City Hall.
Other items on the July 11 agenda included an authorization of the submission of grant application for funding on a proposed Non-Urban Outdoor Recreation Plan. The outdoor recreation grant is $750,000 from Texas Parks and Wildlife to renovate and improve parks in Yoakum. This has been in the works for months, with applications for the grant ending this month.
The top three priorities in the plan from the grant includes pool renovations, improvements to hike and bike walking trails, and baseball and volleyball courts renovations. An estimated amount from the group showed 40% of the $750,000 funding will be going towards the use of a splash pad at the pool, while 10% will go towards renovations of the bathrooms.
A Yoakum public survey from MRB Group of 373 responses showed 15.5% automatically said yes for parks and recreation improvements, 54.7% would support a bond depending on the project and 13.7% said yes depending on the amount, 11.3% had no opinion, and 4.8% declined.
Approval of a pole attachment agreement to provide fiber optic access for the Yoakum Independent School District was also approved
Yoakum City Council also collected eight junked vehicles.
